Gamblers would not be allowed to smoke on Atlantic City casino floors or inside fraternal organizations under a measure passed Monday by a New Jersey Senate committee.

Lawmakers voted 7-0 for the measure, which also covers restaurants, bars and offices.

"No one has the right to engage in conduct that harms others," Fred Jacobs, commissioner of Health and Senior Services for the state, said at a hearing before the vote.

Representatives from the Casino Association of New Jersey said a ban would drive away gamblers and harm the state's economy.

If the ban in New Jersey is passed, the state would join New York, Massachusetts, California and a handful of others that prohibit smoking in indoor public places.

The proposal now heads to the full Senate.

I am not complaining either... this has been in the works for NJ for a long time. The people need it here too, it seems as if NJ has the highest smoking population percapita in the nation (I am just guessing of course).

Greatest thing ever.

I might have to book a trip home if it passes--I felt like crap after my last visit there. For whatever reason, being around second hand smoke knocks the hell out of me since I quit.

I'm politically opposed to laws like this, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying smoke free establishments.

As far as pool halls, good luck. I was in a pool hall on LI the other night, and you could just about make out the SMOKING PROHIBITED BY LAW signs through the haze of smoke.

Have you ever been to tobacco country? Like southern VA, KY, TN? Oy, now that's some smoke!

No complaints from me, either, although it seems like I'm never going to make it back to AC. Jeez, I'm cursed.

I wonder how those of us who were around managed to survive the 70's, when people smoked in class, at work, in movie theaters, restaurants, bars, pool rooms, supermarkets, Broadway shows, the opera, the ballet, in hospitals...
Tha fact is, I can remember very few places where smoking was prohibited. I also remember far fewer people, non-smokers alike, who whined, complained, suffered "allergic reactions", or who lobbied, sued, or tried to impose their preferences on others. My, how things have changed in this country. Casinos are next, huh? Amazing.

The fact that something has always been done a certain way, by itself, is a wprthless argument for upholding the status quo.

Because there are some people (probably not you /images/graemlins/grin.gif) I want to see walk around naked. There is no one I want to see smoking. Not to mention you being naked will only injury people due to rubbernecking...
