Does this concept of taking a flop to see if you hit your longer-shot hands still make sense in the short stack world of party sngs?

I think you'll have better opportunities than this. Since you called in early position, what do you do if someone raises 3x the BB? Fold and look for something when you're in better position. On Level 2 at Party, these hands aren't worth contesting because people will call with anything and 10 hands from now there will probably be 6 people left anyway.

I like..but avoid open-limping.

General rule of thumb is you can take a flop if it costs < 10% of your stack. This gives you enough implied odds to try and hit a set and double up. It clearly applies here, so good play.

while i prefer a few more callers and a bit later position, the limp is fine. implied odds baby!
