It was known as the game of the century when it happened. And Fischer was only 13 at the time.

Some of the really brilliant games take a lot of knowledge to appreciate, though.

At the Grandmaster level, players will resign (quit) when it is plainly obvious that they will be beaten shortly. It is extremely rare that a GM vs. GM game ends with a checkmate.

Strong chess games generally end in resignation and not mate (even at the club level).

For those wondering about the other resignation, and then this game played through 'til checkmate, I believe it was because Fischer was indeed 13, and beating a GM (or whatever rank Byrne held) was a big deal. I picture Byrne smiling as he plays it out through the end knowing how good the kid must feel to beat some sort of a master.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: It might not happen exactly like that, but if he deviates from that line he'll lose even quicker.

Agreed. A certain grandmaster offered me a compelling proof that this is not the real Gata Kamsky. He said "Gata Kamsky is still alive, therefore, he can not be playing poker. If he were, his father would have killed him already."

I'll be playing in the Foxwoods Open (http://www.chesstour.com/fox05.htm) chess tournament March 25-27 if anyone will be around and would like to see a live chess tournament with hundreds of players.

I reserved my room intending to play poker while some friends played chess, but my Easter plans fell through. I figured, what the hell, I play way too much poker anyway, and now that I don't have to miss the last two rounds I might as well play some chess instead.

Curtains is Greg Shahade.
He is a VERY good player. I ws familiar with his talents (as well as his sister Jennifer Shahade) from Chess Life magazine long before I ever played poker or came to 2+2.

I don't know Tim's name.

This game of the century was probably in the 2 hour range (since it was only 21 moves) I'm guessing. Maybe longer since time-controls were probably slightly longer at the US Champinship in 1963. Not sure though.

It is a VERY famous game partly because it's pretty darn good and partly because Fischer was only 13.

I am a chess fan also...although my play completely sucks.
USCF-1400 rated (which Tim and others can tell you means I really do suck and I'm not just being humble).
I've played in a couple of decently large weekend tournaments before. But none of the major ones.

Obviously I make money playing poker....chess, while enjoyable, is not going to be profitable for me so that is a fun hobby while poker is an occupation.
If I am able to stabalize my poker income (thus having more time for hobbies) I will definitely be looking to get back into chess tournaments for fun.

I've heard about how draining big poker tournaments can be...and I know there are some REAL long hours in there. But, to me, there's nothing like the mental drain of studying a position for 30-45 minutes for a SINGLE MOVE trying to scramble out of a tough position or just trying to gain a small advantage in a relatively closed and balanced position....or a wide-open and crazy one...whatever.

MicroBob

I would be especially interested in getting back into chess tourneys since some of the bigger ones take place at Foxwoods (as Tim mentioned) as well as Las Vegas and Reno.

Turn it into a 2 or 3 week trip with chess in one half and maybe a poker tourney in the other half.
By the end of it I suspect my head would explode.

I checked and I officially have ZERO games in the database. I wasn't expecting any though.
I played a game 15 years ago against some 2200 rated player that made it into the Cincinnati Chess magazine or whatever the hell it was called. It was actually a really interesting game but I don't know where my copy is.

Since I had fallen out of chess a bit since taking up poker I was unfamiliar with the chessgames.com database of games. What an awesome resource! Thanks for posting the link.
