View Full Version : How's the lifestyle, Dynasty?

I assume you're pretty young (I'm an old fart myself) and can handle the tension & pressure (assuming there is any) of playing not just for fun but to pay the rent - plus the irregular or late-night hours, again assuming that that's the case.
Also, what made you decide to try it? There must have been some point where you thought "Hey, I could make this work."
I assume you're inquiring about playing professional poker. It is the greatest "job" in the world. No regular hours and no bosses. I wouldn't have it any other way. Let's see what Dynasty thinks.

I'm also curious how someone can go from posting beginner's questions about $1-$5 7CS hands to playing poker for a living in less than a year?
Dynasty is very, very smart, very, very disciplined, and very, very hardworking.
This is not to say that he's perfect. For example, he consistently misspells the word "definitely." ;)

Let's see; no medical insurance, no 401k, no paid vacation or holidays, no employer to pay half of your Social Security taxes, no steady paycheck - in fact your paycheck will often be negative even for a winning player, horrific losing streaks, an unlimited supply of second hand smoke, want to buy a car? - just watch the laughter when you put "Professional poker player" on your loan application...
The up side; no boss, make your own schedule.
Hmmm...Don't think I'll quit my day job.

I tried it for 3years,AND I did win{$20-26k}a year playing$10/20 But along with the things you mentioned there are alot of other things you give up.I now have a job that offers me the insurance ect.and I still play twice a week(on week ends when the games are best)Playing full time was fun but making say $25k then spending $3k for insurance no retirement, how about travel expences?O.K. you live in L.V. or near a casino you probably moved away from your friends and family.Do you like to sleep till noon then go into a crummy casino and realy never get to enjoy the outside? This IS an enjoyable lifestyle to some, and I say more power to them..It's just not for me. /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif

I know I have the skill and bankroll to take a shot at professional poker, but I just couldn't take the lifestyle...I know the advantages of being your own boss and playing whenever you feel like it. I just can't fathom the fact that your entire way of living could depend on a turn of a card....just my opinion.
Plus, I like my job, it keeps me sane during those losing streaks...
