View Full Version : I need some rocking indie tunes!!

CallMeIshmael

I saw someone else post some music he likes, and then ask for some recommendations. Which I thought was a pretty cool idea. So, I'll give it a try:

Favourite stuff from 2004:

Wilco - A ghost is born
Iron and Wine - Our endless numbered days
Arcade Fire - Funeral

Favourite Stuff from the past 10 years or so:

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (their best. Plus all others)
The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin and Yoshima Battles...
Iron and Wine - Creek drank the craddle
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow
Neutral Milk Hotel - Aeroplane over the sea

Stuff I don't like:

Radiohead, death cab/postal service, modest mouse, dashboard confessional.

Any help would be super!
thanks.

Have you heard The Decemberists? I haven't listened to indie rock in a while but if I remember right they weren't entirely unlike NMH.

I'm hesitant to reccomend anything to you because Modest Mouse might be the best indie band of the last 10 years...(older stuff).. that being said.

Harder: And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Codes

Folksy: Kings of Convenience - Anything

Punkesque in theory, Avante Garde in Practice: Cursive - The Ugly Organ

Shake yo Groove Thang: Minus The Bear

Lovely: Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

New Age Crescendo Rock: Explosions in the Sky

Anything Godspeed.

I just don't get you. Everything on your list is fantastic music. How on earth can you not like Radiohead??? I am in denial that you actually don't like them. The rest of your taste is too good. Get stoned and listen to them some more.

That said, I would recommend the Fiery Furnaces. Blueberry Boat is a fantastic album, but takes a little getting used to. They just released an album of B sides which are great and a lot more accessible, so I would probably start with that.

Not sure if you like the Pixies, but if not, get Surfer Rosa. If you do like the Pixies, you should pick up Frank Black's solo album Teenager of the Year. Just got it, and really like it.

Another thought: Broken Social Scene's You Forget it in People is great as well

Big pixies / BSS fan. Haven't checked out 'Teenager of the year'. Thanks.

Follow up, RE: Radiohead. There are certain albums that I just don't get, but I should get. I, once every 6 months or so, will go back and give it a shot.

About 4 years ago, I would have said I couldn't stand Dark Side of the Moon. But, I would keep trying to understand. Then, one day, BAM!

Floyd is now my second favourite band (yet another reason why I should like OK Comp??)

Other examples of this happening include 'Pet Sounds' and 'In the Aeroplane over the sea.'

So, I still keep trying to get OK Comp, simply because everyone who likes what I like says I should like it. So there still is hope for me!

Well the last two Radiohead albums have been kind of self-consciously difficult. He seems to like more melodic, songwritey stuff. That sounds condescending I guess but I don't mean it to, my taste is the same. Although I do like OK Computer.

I'll second Cursive - The ugly organ. If you're big on lyrics, it's amazing story telling and really really good music.

Dunno how hard of stuff you like, but two really really good harder bands are the blood brothers and saetia. hot cross is less hard (they are partially saetia after saetia's break up) and still realyl good.

if you haven't heard The Fire Theft, they're really good, ex members of Sunny Day Real Estate. If you haven't heard SDRE they're awesome awesome too.

jets to brazil is good. burning airlines is good. most people like black rebel motorcycle club, but i'm not a huge fan. i think you'd like them though.

if you like dancier stuff, the rapture is good, radio 4 is good but a little more on the electronic side, but quite good. LCD soundsystem is rockin too.

I really don't like Muse. A friend of mine said I had to listen, because I would love them. Sadly, no.

Also, I would like to point something else out here: I tend to differentiate between bands I don't like, and those I don't think are good.

I very much recognize Radiohead as an amazing talent. Even though I don't *like* them, I can appreciate them. Hell, even I was annoyed by Kid Rock whiping his ass with Radiohead toilet paper in that video. What a jerk. Now, he just plain sucks.

Also, where are the Wilco lovers out there?

Statement: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is thus far the best album I've listened to this decade.

I don't know if he's been mentioned yet, but these songs by Matthew Good are epic, IMO:

Mayday - Old Blood

This album came out about 3 years ago and was hugely ignored by most of the indie press. The lead singer used to lead another great band called 'Lullaby for the working class'.

Here are 2 tracks from the album:
Captain (http://www.saddle-creek.com/sounds/Mayday_Captain.mp3)
Come Home (http://www.saddle-creek.com/sounds/Mayday_ComeHome.mp3)

I had never been there. Thanks for the resouce.

Yeah, FF is semi-big here. But, not like the strokes big or anything.

I dig some of the stuff. Really love the matinee. I've heard it desribed as 'what the second strokes album should have been.' Which I could see. I was lukewarm of the first strokes, and the second one was lame to me.

While we're at it... I also need some rocking old tunes!!

I mean, I just discovered Nick Drake a year ago. So, if anyone has some old stuff that doesn't get a lot of attention these days, I'd love to hear about it.

If I had to pick some old stuff I really liked:

Beatles - Big 5 + Let it be + Magical mystery tour + help
(nothing before help... but I don't think listing these albums as something you like really narrows down your taste)

Floyd - The big ones, but I also really dig animals and wish you were here

Zeppelin - I only really dig 4 (take that for what its worth)

the Who - Whos next and quadrophenia

Stones - Beggars banquet and Let it bleed

I'm hit or miss with Dylan.. but I love blood on the tracks

The more melodic half of the velvet underground is some of my favourite stuff. If you listen to them, you know what I mean. (stuff like sweet jane)

Thanks for all the replies btw!! you guys are great!

Well, at the risk of hearing another "Those aren't hardcore!!! Blood to Blood, The Cro-Mags, Haven Street!! That's hardcore!!" style rant, I'll say that I like Poison the Well, and Norma Jean for starters. Thursday is one of my favorite bands, but I usually get a lot of arguement over whether they're hardcore, screamo, or some other derivative.

Some From Autumn to Ashes stuff is decent, they put on an awesome show though. I never got into Atreyu, The Blood Brothers, and especially underOATH. In fact, I basically hate underOATH.

JoA: yeah, I came off a little hard in that post. I didn't mean anything towards you by it, just afraid it was gonna turn into a situation like the last one.

Somehow I foresaw a lot of those when you said you get accused of not being hardcore. I love most of those bands too. FATA's new album sucks but their first full length was grrrrreat and they do put on an amazing show.

Boy Sets Fire is one of my favorites but they're definitely in the normal hardcore genre. Don't really know what they are. Suprised you don't like Blood Brothers though, too high pitched?

Thursday is one of my favorite bands too. One of the best shows I've ever been to was right after they released their first album the played this show in a shelterhouse in a park with like 40 people in the audience, half of whom were in the bands that were playing that night. It was Thursday and a bunch of hXc bands like Santa Sangre, xTHROWDOWNx, Stretch Armstrong, and De La Hoya. Amazing amazing show.

mmbt0ne
03-12-2005, 09:12 PM
Oh man, Stretch Armstrong is good stuff. The Thursday/Thrice/Coheed concert a little over a year ago was the last great concert I've been to.

Calling me hardcore would definitely be a stretch since I listen to Movielife, Motion City Soundtrack, Further Seems Forever, and the like a lot. I don't know what it is about Blood Brothers, I don't hate them, just kind of indifferent. I haven't listened to much Boy Sets Fire, no reason except laziness, but I hear good things.

Boy Sets Fire are really good I would lump in new style AFi and Avenged Sevenfold as must listens if you like them.

Theres a load of bands around that are probably more metalcore than hardcore I would stick FATA, Every Time I die (or somthing on wrong PC to check) and bands like Trivium that have thier roots in hardcore but are basically taking on the gothenberg sound.

I now slapshot and a couple of the other second wave hard core bands still seem to be knocking around but not doing anything special.

I think to a point it was enivitable that hardcore would move back towards metal with bands like hatebreed doing well and the fact that a lot of the pop punk just sounds so tired now, I know bands like NOFX and similar are still going but are people actually listening to them still still seems to be all the same stle with no progression.

Metal has started going back to its roots and I think hardcore is as well.

Yeah I like Avenged Sevenfold a lot. I don't like the new AFI stuff as much, it's just TOO produced. The older stuff I like a ton though and used to listen to it all the time.

And you're right, I definitely like hardcore with a more metal edge. I'm also a fan of bands like In Flames, which are straight up metal. The metal riffs and solos are what draw me to bands like Atreyu, even though their lyrics are childish and whiny.

I tend to stay away from grindcore, like Anodyne. I like heavy stuff but I don't want to feel like I'm in a fight against the music I'm listening to, I want to feel like I'm fighting someone else with the music as my homeboy backing me up.

If like In Flames have to also get stuff by (if havent already) Soilwork, Dark Tranquilty, Arch Enemy and loads of other bands Sweden is prbably the best place for metal at the moment so much good stuff particulary the goth metal stuff that I really like.

This is really good site for finding good music of that genre

Swedish Metal (http://www.swedishmetal.net/default.html)

Dark Tranquility and In Flames are touring the states together shortly well worth seeing if you can.
