It's an ordinary PP, Wednesday evening table, fairly laggy. What should hero do on the river?

Betting probably has value here, but the opponents you talk about are the type that will call all the way with a naked ace hoping to catch. Since you can check and see a showdown, I don't think anything is wrong in doing so (again I feel like betting does have value though). If you were out of position, you would certainly have to bet in this spot.

I probably value bet this. 2nd pair might call. A lot of worse queens will call, and there's no guarantee they have an A just because one hit

You and Brad exactly summed up my 15-second thinking process before checking and beating 55 from one opponent, and a pair of 3s with a flush draw from the other one. What finally clinched it was realizing that for a medium-sized pot I'd have a hard time calling a raise with second pair only...I'd DO it, don't get me wrong, but I'd hate it. I just couldn't imagine what they'd be running to the river with other than, at worst, ace-rag.

If you bet this river and are raised I think you have to fold this.
