View Full Version : Early AA misplayed?

Was dealt AA first hand of a 20+2. I think I may have made two mistakes on the same hand…
1- Raise of T80 was not significant enough to have anyone fold and I would probably prefer to be heads-up with another strong hand when the flop comes.
2- When re-raising the pot to with an all-in, did I in fact only allowed better hands to call me? At the time it seemed a good idea to try sucking in a weaker hand (AJ, AT, KJ,…) but in retrospect, it might not be the case…

CO (t800)
Hero (t800)
SB (t800)
BB (t800)
UTG (t800)
UTG+1 (t800)
UTG+2 (t800)
MP1 (t800)
MP2 (t800)
MP3 (t800)

Preflop: Hero is Button with A /images/graemlins/spade.gif , A /images/graemlins/heart.gif .
4 folds, MP2 calls 15, 2 folds, Hero raises to t80, SB calls, BB calls, MP2 calls.

Flop: (t70) 10 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif, J /images/graemlins/club.gif, 2 /images/graemlins/heart.gif (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP2 bets t80, Hero bets t775 (all-in)…

Thanks!

Raise more pf. 80 gives low pairs odds to call. After that a push is ok 95% of the time.

IMO, this is a not too well disguised bad beat post.

I can't say you played this hand very poorly at all. You could have raised more pre-flop but a raise of 80 with one limper seems OK. I would still think I have the best hand on the flop and probably try to raise such that AJ and KJ would call. Either way, all of my chips are in the middle.

Thank you for the answers.
I was wondering at first if a 2/3 pot size bet (250 or so) would be ok/better post flop. If you would then be re-raised all-in you would have the option to fold and keep some 470 chips.
I would think that once raised all-in it's basically a coin flip given the range of hands that would push (AJ, AT, QQ, KJ vs JJ, TT, AJ). Then you are putting 470 into a 1,290 pot.

I think the raise preflop was fine. I don't think I move all in on the flop raise. I make it 300. This let's him know I'm serious. His bet on that flop could be a pair of Jacks with a good kicker (good for you) or two pair or a set (very bad for you). If he calls your bet, and checks the turn he is probably folding when you bet.

If he comes over the top all in, then I would probably fold this early in the tournament.

The question you want to ask post flop is "why is MP betting into me after I made it 80 to go pre flop?". Once you figure out if he's testing the waters vs. trapping you, the other questions you posed get a lot more relevant.
