I haven't played poker or done anything even remotely productive in the last week or so (homework included). I know for a fact that for the last three days i've eaten only chocolate muffins, 44 oz. drinks (various kinds), and taquitos and I feel like [censored]. If any of you are considering getting world of warcraft, don't do it. Seriously.

Good luck quitting (I hope you're trying to!).

This happened to me somewhat with Diablo II.

I went as far as selling my accounts, selling the game on eBay, and STILL crawled back a year later when they released the new patch. Thank God that I discovered poker.

I was forced to quit by my boss (was using work computer) .. It was very diffult for me to stop playing.. embarrassingly so. After about 3 weeks I cashed out some chips to buy a computer of my own that was capable of playing, and just got it this weekend. I installed WoW but have not had much desire to play it again.. mostly because I didn't like how hard it was to quit and how much it controlled my life. I understand what you're going thru and can only advise to try and quit it cold turkey. Depending on your personality this might be possible on your own.. although for me I don't think I could have done it without having my hand forced.

My roomate has been sucked into this game. I've never witnessed anything like this. At least 6 hours of play a night, and the weekends is even more. That game is scary addictive.

If it makes you feel any better my DAD cannot stop playing it, he is 59.

he has multiple characters after like 3 weeks, one level 30 already

get a good clock addon. they usually have a thing where you can see how long youve played. set a limit per day, like 2 hours or something. never let yourself go over or youll eventually just forget about it totally.

also, dont blame the game for your shitty diet

This is the very reason why I finally quit EVERCRACK (everquest) I played for nearly 5 years. Although it did bring in a nice side source of income. It cost me 2 girl friends and one was an engagement! Which I thank ever day it ended.

OK, I haven't played WoW. I have played a few other computer games, although not MMORPGS (is that right?) really.

Can someone explain what makes this game so addicting? Is it just the constant leveling up? Looting other players?

LALDAAS

I use to be on the PVP server. Its kinda like poker log in beat the crap out of the and take their gear/coin.

Then they complain you have slaughtered them 3 times this week.

LOL

Good Times.

There is something about moving up levels and becoming more "powerful" and obtaining gear to enhance that power.

Then you run into that guy who pwned you last week and own him and take back what he took form you and some /images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you have ever experienced owning some one you know what I am talking about.

Take time off for poker and other parts of life. The beauty of WoW is that the rested XP feature lets you play half as oftern for the same gain. Good times.

I eventually ended up with 3 characters to play, so I can rotate through them and take advantage of the rested XP.

These days, I play poker when I want to, not because I feel like I should, and my bankroll is all the better for it. I am far more focused when playing, and have something else to do (WoW) when poker becomes boring or pisses me off.

I got WoW a month ago, and still haven't played. I'm scared. My second month of billing just processed. I'd rather casino whore and play poker than get addicted to ANOTHER game.

You mean WoW?

World of Warcraft, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. It's like a cross between Diablo II and Warcraft 3 (if you know those games)

(And to the picky ones, I know I could have described it better than Diablo II meets Warcraft 3 but I was trying to give games he'd know, okay?)

I know nothing of any of these games. The last RPG I played was FInal Fantasy 5 for Playstation? I have not played online games ever. Thanks though? (I'm specifically not googling it because I'm afraid it might stir something that makes me want to try it)

for those of you that want to see what the best RPG is like:
www.worldofwarcraft.com (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com)
www.worldofwar.net (http://www.worldofwar.net)

have some self control. just imagine how much of your life you are throwing away if you become addicted and stop playing so much . it doesnt mean quit the game. the secret to slimming your gametime down easy is to not let it interfere with any other task or especially social activity.

besides i figured poker players would be into a game that you can dominate with skill, WoW has like zero skill in it compared to the cheaper Halo 2. And this game is so easy to sit down for 30 min at a time even, rather than the min time to be productive on WoW, being like 2 hours.

basically if you dont let it interfere with personal tasks and social activity, it won't even touch your healthy lifestyle and the fun will still be there, plus you will never be bored again.

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A SKILL GAME (http://www.bungie.net/Games/Halo2/)

and if you already have it on XBL then send "Bren The Master" a friend request. Make sure you say your a 2+2er or ill probably decline it.

Two things really: In a lot of ways, they are like a Skinner box (operant conditioning), giving sporatic rewards.

The other reason is the social aspect. You get to know a lot of people through the game who you only know through the game. Since so many things required coordinated effort, there is a pressure to avail yourself to accomplish things.

What really sucks about them is the wasted time. There is a ton of down time and organization time, etc.

I played EQ for about 5 years, and I enjoyed it (especially the social aspects. I was in a highly organized group that didn't waste a lot of time when it did something, so that mitigated some of the down time.) I still pop by the old message board to say hi, even though I haven't played in a couple of years.

In the end, though, they are way too much of a time sink for a perfectionist. If you obsess over details (and poker players are prone to that sort of thing), you can easily get sucked into these things.

I hear you but at the same time I'm not sure you should say that unless you've been addicted to a video game before. Video games are harder to quit than cigarettes, for me anyway. I wouldn't be suprised if for some people they're as addictive as hard drugs. Certainly seems like it, don't you think, when a mother lets her baby die from hunger because she can't stop playing Everquest long enough to feed it?

I agree this is a question of taking personal responsibility. Taking personal responsibility for getting help with quitting, that is.
