What are some good ways to anticipate betting action pre-flop, so that you can make a better decision about playing small suited connectors etc???

Be in late position?

Okay, couldn't resist. Seriously though, if you're not in late position then the only thing you can do is know your opponents. If a maniac is sitting a seat or two behind you and you don't already have the callers you need, maybe you had better pass. Also, if the table is full of rocks, you had better pass. Basically, if you're not in late position you need a loose passive table to play these types of hands. Fortunately those types of tables are not *too* terribly difficult to find if you work at it.
