wacki

Eh, I've mixed them up before. Not because I don't know the difference, but because I am almost never dedicating 100% of my attention to OOT posts.

Multitasking is a bitch.

Your right, it's pretty annoying.

Seriously? I do think it matters, and it does bother me that so many people make such an elementary mistake so often.

no I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about people who genuinely don't realize the word "you're" exists

In an informal setting I dont bother with that stuff.

You might be a tad bit anal.

this gets on my nerves. if i knew the person knew better but was lazy i wouldn't care, but it just incenses me when they don't know better.

also there, their, they're
and to, too - most people at least get two right.

but then again, i was an english major. there are many littly textual idosyncracies that do that. "its" and "it's" in particular; and the misuse of the semicolon.

but big freaking deal, really.

I used to write like that on aim, for that exact reason. I hate using apostraphes on aim, but I hate writing youre, so I started writing ur. I decided I hated that though so now I just write youre, which looks dumb.

Almost as much as complement/compliment (this one is high up on my piss me off list). But, more so than principle/principal.

Holy moly it pisses me off. The posts are so much less clear and the people look so stupid when those terms are misused.

And I agree, it's that people don't know that " you're " exists.

Let's not forget the terrible - and terribly popular - confusion over "it's" and "its."

The apostrophe in phrases like "best song of the 80's" also bugs the [censored] out of me, but I guess this mistake has become so common that struggling against it is futile.

Amen. Forget the bogus apostrophe in 80's -- what about the apostrophe in everyday common plural words? "I drank 4 Corona's last night!" or "I love Hot Pocket's!" or "I mucked my card's."

Some people will do it in any possessive word: "his and her's." (I saw that today).

define intelligent. i dropped out of school in the 8th grade, but feel i am 'smarter' than the majority of people i come in contact with.

Michael Davis

I'm not intelligent enough to define it.

sublime
03-09-2005, 09:21 AM
lol, i do get your point. intelligence is probably a very difficult thing to gauge, but i personally dont think the proper use of words like "your/you're" etc are all that important.

Michael Davis
03-09-2005, 09:29 AM
I'm not offically suggesting a link, or claiming that I use this to judge someone's intelligence. I am merely making an observation that seems true.

I see it all the time, I do it when I'm typing posts on this board. I usually catch it, but every 1 in 10 times I just go "[censored] it... this is an internet messageboard". When I'm proofreading someone's paper or writing for school/work etc. and they make an it's, its, their, they're, etc. mistake it really pisses me off. But on this board I make it sometimes just because it's the internet and it doesn't really matter too much. And I tolerate it because I make it a bunch too.
