what was that line from Rounders? something about Mike's "Ali like return to the ring..."? I decided to stage my own Ali like return as my wife and I went over to the weekend. the stardust was kind enough to provide me with a room and meals for the weekend, as well as $500 in gaming tokens (posted about this earlier).
I decided that, while roulette was my most hated game ever (sit there forever on end, and then gamble at a horrible and boring proposition), might be the best option available to assure ourselves of a profit from the tokens. there were 5 $100 tokens that had to be played individually. you either won a real chip and got the token back, or lost the token.
Unfotunately, the Stardust frowns upon partnering up with these (no hedging, was what we were told), so we left to figure out a better option.
Red/Black was out the window, so I figured that pass/no pass would be the best way to do this. The wife and I went to opposite ends of the table. She played pass, I played don't, and we got out of there with $400. less than the expectation, but we weren't into this for the math. we had plane tickets to pay for. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
partway through our anti-hedging covert operation, a pit boss asked me if I knew the young lady on the other end of the table (my wife). I said no, but I'd be willing to get to know her if he'd introduce us. he laughed, and walked away. I'm sure they knew we were together, and was just making sure that we weren't overtly fleecing them. anyway, what's four hundred bucks to the stardust?
With the tickets secure, I proceeded to get thrashed in every game I played. 3-6 at the stardust? won two hands in 4 hours. 15-30 at bellagio? same. 3-6 at the stardust again? same again. amazing symmetry on this trip.
I had aces and kings once and queens twice on this trip. flopped or turned sets with each of them, and lost with each of them. did not make a draw (though I flopped a couple of flushes and a straight). not a single draw. Oh well, twelve hours aint much play.
went over to the stardust on saturday night and proceeded to get pummeled in BJ. did nice things to my casino rating, though, as I had a pit critter commisserating and making sympathetic clucking noises as she watched the carnage.
Worst beat of the trip: Wife was in Banana Republic at Primm, so I went to starbucks to get the elixer of life (caffeine). fourth in line, and I discover that each of the three in front of me are ordering three or more drinks each. each of the three decide that they want to pay their ten or so dollar tab with plastic. each of the three happen to get a different counter person. Each counter person seemed to have missed the starbucks introductory course in credit card machine usage.
Ate at Sushi on Tropicana. Great place that we hit up every trip. All you can eat for 23.95. sushi and hot food is included, and everything is made to order and good quality. Corner of Tropicana and Topaz. They also have an all you can eat and drink (beer and sake) deal on Monday and Tuesday nights for $31 or so. looks like a winner also.
Looking at the trip, not a biggie. I got pummeled, but had a good time. I didn't gamble too much, since the wife was there, and I set up the town for my next trip with my buddies in a couple of weeks. The town's over confident now. it'll ease up on me next time. I know it!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
one other ali like return: made my first sports bet in three years this weekend. I quit a few years ago, not because I was losing, but because I was putting in too many hours a week for too little profit. after looking at my records for the previous couple of years, I found that I was winning about two dollars an hour based on ten hours a week of studying. The Niner/redskin total (under 45) looked like a slam dunk, though, so I cashed in my easy 50 bucks. I think I'll re-retire, now.
