say a man in his mid 20's was to move to cali and plays poker for a living. he plays mostly on-line, but being close to a cardroom is key. what is the most economical area this cat could live in that is close to a card room? whats a typical rent?

being 'safe'is of course key.

same question for vegas

Vegas is easy: basically anywhere.

Cali, the proximate/safe/affordable matrix is significantly more complex.

I live in Azusa, which is in east LA county. That whole area - West Covina, Glendora, San Dimas, Azusa - is pretty safe and it's 25 minutes from Commerce Casino (which is about the only place you'll want to play). It's a nice area that's out of the downtown LA feel, and housing isn't that bad either. We pay $1500/ mo for a 3bed/ 2.5 bath condo that's 1300ft2 and comes with a 2 car garage. You can get 2000ft2 houses for about 2k/mo.

Vegas housing will be a little cheaper, but I think you'll still be about 25 mins from anything on the strip. Plus, there's no beaches in Vegas.

i currently pay $1000 for a one bedroom 'in-law' type apartment with no garage (all utilitys though). its considered a bargain /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

how is the 20/40 at commerce?

The 20/40 and 40/80 games at Commerce are the best in the world to consistently play in.

I know the Bicycle is out in Cali. Is that place any good?

You should be able to get a "nice", meaning better than decent, 1 bedroom within 15 mins of the Bellagio for under $700.

Also, I'd submit the Mirage 20-40 is better than the commerce 20-40, though the commerce 40-80 may well be the best game in the world.

The best place in the LA area is definitely the South Bay...Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, something like that. You're not too far from the casinos if you time your driving to avoid rush hour, it's about as safe as it gets in LA, and you'll never find better weather anywhere on Earth.

A decent 1-bedroom shouldn't cost you more than $1200-1300 or so.

The bad thing about the area between manhattan/hermosa/etc and commerce is that rush hour lasts from 9am to 9pm

That's a little bit of an exaggeration. But yeah, the traffic's bad.

Still, the climate and beaches more than make up for it, IMO.

The rents aren't even that bad unless you're right on the strand.

Maybe on the 405, but you don't need that freeway to get anywhere. The 105 isn't bad at all outside of 4:30-6:30 or so...when I lived in Redondo, I could get to Commerce in 40 minutes most of the time.

Where'd you live in Redondo?

I lived just off Manhattan Beach Blvd... close to where it intersected with Aviation.

The games are good at The Bicycle too. But there are more of them at Commerce at the 15-30 level and higher. The two casinos are a ten minute drive from one another, so one could check out the action at both and then decide where to play. The Bicycle is a friendlier atmosphere, with the tables not as close together.

For bigger stakes, Commerce is the place. Even during the day midweek, it's not unusual for there to be 4-5 40-80 games going and a couple of 100-200 (or 80-160) games. The Bike rarely gets even one 40-80 down.

My advice would be to check out the action at both places for the stakes that interest you.

well that would tilt the decision in favor of LV. that is pretty damn cheap.

i enjoyed playing in the mirage 20/40 game. the local pros are pretty amicable and play VERY straightforward.

I grew up in Redondo (leading to my obvious bias in this thread), a few blocks from where Torrance Blvd. crosses Prospect. I also lived for a couple of years recently pretty much right on that same corner. Now, I'm in El Segundo.

Before you decide on Vegas, consider the fact that you can't get food at the table. If I was going to be a full-time pro playing long sessions every day, that would be a major consideration. But then, the grass always looks greener on the other side. Wait a minute, the grass actually *is* greener is Cali /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

if you saw me you would realize that missing a meal would be a good thing /images/graemlins/smile.gif

another question, i dont think the mirage offers a 'comp' system in the poker room. does commerce?

At Commerce, food is free at the table if you're playing 15-30 or above (I believe that's where the cutoff is).
