i cannot figure how the A8 hand can be soo much of a favorite

The A has the K dominated. The flush possibility doesn't do much to offset the common 8. Run the same thing with K8o to see the difference. Or give the K another live card, like a 7, or add straight possibilities with a 9.

the straight is unlikely. so i give it 1 out? flush draw = 9, ace = 3. 13 outs = 48.1% not 74% as it says?..

When you are dealing with probability, the word unlikely has to be factored in.

That is called domination. Since the 8 is used by both hands, only a king can help the dog.

Try plugging these in:

kc 7c
As 8h

K7 is worse than K8, but it does better against A8 because there is no domination (ie a 7 or a K helps the dog).

You put the board cards under the 'dead cards' which makes this very similar to a preflop matchup between the two.

This is the proper pre-flop set up. (http://www.twodimes.net/poker/?g=h&b=&d=+&h=kc+8c%0D%0AAs+8h)

Now you're looking at 70.8% - 29.2%

Yes, but I think he was interested in the postflop matchup with a paired K and the flush draw.
