Wow, I'd be up against poker players who read and understand basic and advanced concepts and strategies? What about the fish man, what about the fish? *pout*

Yeah, lemme know when. I've already setup my home game schedule for April (16th and 30th) I tried to schedule it around the NE Poker Classic at Foxwoods so I wouldn't conflict. Howsabout yours on the 23rd? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Which date works best?

April 23, 1:00 p.m. - this date is best for me, but it is Passover. There's a large Orthodox community in my neighborhood, so if we have the tournament on the 23rd I ask everyone to be respectful.

May 7, 1:00 p.m. - I'll have to check my baseball schedule.

I also have to get clearance from the tower. The Warden is very good about the home games, but it's best to be sure.

I can do either one (haven't setup my May home game schedule, but I could work around yours).

And being only half-jewish, Passover wouldn't be a problem.

If need be I can fill the game from my regular homegame list. The buyin is steeper than usual, but I should be able to get 16-18 players. Perhaps we can draw from your game, grandgnu's, etc. in a pinch, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Definately tell Henry about it. I want that Horse's Ass trophy, dammit!

Alright, you're considering a bounty and such. Let's assume you've got 16 players @ $100 a pop. How about something like this:

1st: $600
2nd: $400
3rd: $300
4th: $200

Bounty Hunter: Player who's eliminated the most other players will take $100 from the prize pool?

Or, to make it more competitive.....

1st: $800
2nd: $400
3rd: $200

Bounty Hunter: $200

No guarantees there! We have a misdeal penalty at my home game where you have to pay the big blind to the pot for a misdeal, but we usually scrap it once the blinds get higher. Sunday night, they made me pay the penalty at a high level, and I was somewhat short-stacked, so I went all-in out of spite with J2o to get my money back. I got called by AKs, and caught a 2 to take it down and double up.

Of course, I wouldn't pull such a stupid move with a bunch of fine players like yourselves...or would I?? /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It's quiet at work on Sundays, so we play for fun (i.e. no $$$ involved) and this one lady has the most ridiculous luck. If I had her luck and my skill I'd be friggin invincible! *smirk*

Alright, so pre-flop I've got J/J and I raise it up, and she calls me with a 2/4 and the flop is 2/4/2. Yeah, it keeps getting better though.

Later on we're down to four players and I've got the A/J offsuit and I'm 2nd in chips. There's one short-stacked player and the other two are close to my stack. The blinds/antes are pretty high so I push pre-flop and she calls me with 8/4 of diamonds, and another kid (short-stack) calls with A/7 offsuit.

Flop is 2/3/5 and the 6 on the turn seals my fate (there's no 4 coming on the river for a split). I'm still trying my damndest to convince her to come play at my home game, she'll get destroyed. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alright, with 18 players here's what I recommend as options, for what it's worth:

Prize Pool: $1,800

1st: $800
2nd: $500
3rd: $300
Bounty Hunter: $200

Or

1st: $900
2nd: $450
3rd: $250
4th: $100
Bounty Hunter: $100

Lazymeatball

is there any point to a bounty hunter? Isn't the person who knocks out the most players most likely going to win money anyway? What do you like about bounties?

Slow Play Ray
03-08-2005, 12:58 PM
I actually prefer something in-between:

1st: $850
2nd: $450
3rd: $250
4th: $150
Bounty: $100 (doesn't need to be high, since one of the money finishers is the most likely to win it anyway..)

But whatever, I'm in regardless of the payouts.

[/ QUOTE ]

We don't have to do a bounty hunter, I just think it's a fun concept. And just because someone has knocked out the most players doesn't mean they're also going to come in 1st and win most of the money.

You might take down three or four short-stacked players in one hand and not make much of a profit, but you still got everyone THAT much closer to the money, follow?

You might be the guy who gets heads-up and you've done all the work, eliminating most of the other players, and then the other player beats you heads-up and gets most of the money despite all of the work you did.

Anyway, the bounty hunter is just an idea, we don't have to do it. It's Dan's (Kilgores) game, so his final ruling how it will all pan out.

I guess it comes down to whether we want the payouts to be fair/reasonable, or ultra-competitive?

I like both, so it doesn't matter to me. But given that we're a group of 2+2'ers, I would think making it ultra-competitive would encourage us to play our damndest and not just settle for 4th place.

ULTRA-COMPETITIVE

1st: $900
2nd: $600
3rd: $300

COMPETITIVE:

1st: $900
2nd: $500
3rd: $300
4th: $100

FLAT PAYOUT:

1st: $700
2nd: $500
3rd: $350
4th: $250

I guess the flat payout makes it worth your while regardless of where you finish, everyone gets a decent payout.

I think you're giving us all way too much credit. I earned the coveted "Horses Ass" trophy at my last home game for being first out (granted I had a LOT of distractions and forces working against me, and I had just come off a final table finish in the morning tourney at Foxwoods)

My thoughts on the payout (assuming 18 players):

1st - 50% ($900)
2nd - 28% ($504)
3rd - 14% ($252)
4th - 8% ($144)

This tourney should be top heavy, IMO, but since most of us are used to the stars payouts, we could do that, too. Of course, you can cut deals if you want.

I should mention that there's no rake/vig.

Not too keen on using the prize pool for bounties. Let's think of something else.

Slow Play Ray

I was just trying to get away from uneven payouts ($504, $252, etc.) Instead of having to make sure we have change, if everyone can be paid easily with $20, $50 and $100 bills it makes life easier.

As far as the bounty stuff goes, maybe everyone puts up 10 bucks into the bounty pool and for each player you take out you earn their 10 bucks? Or make it 25 bucks. Or don't do it at all. Doesn't matter much.

With 18 players there will be 180,000 chips, so once it hits 5K/10K it should be pretty close to over, if we even get that far.

My above structure is a good 7 and 1/2 hours long. If we instead use 20 minute levels you'll shave 150 minutes off that (so 6 hours long instead)

Here's my proposal. Short 15 minute levels, but it's more gradual for the first couple hours. We could lenghten the levels to 30 minutes or so beginning at the 2500/5000 level to allow those remaining to play poker as opposed to an all-in fest. Thoughts?

Nice, looking forward to meeting and competing with some of the other posters.

I just got a new guy trained up at work, so I was able to take today off. Planned to hit the morning tourney, but Jenn and I couldn't sleep so we drove down to Foxwoods and arrived around 2am.

Played some $1-$3 7-card stud (thought I was sitting down at the 1-5 tables at the time) and found it to have LOTS of loose action, plenty of chasers and to be more profitable than my times spent at the 1-5 tables.

Started with $100, got my stack up to $250 at one point, but left with $225 in the end. Not a bad rate for less than 3 hours of poker (over 40 bucks an hour)

If only Foxwoods was closer, I really think I could easily supplement my income, perhaps replace it altogether and play poker full-time eventually. The lower limit 7-stud table was great compared to a typical $1-$5 table. On the 1-5 tables usually you wind up heads-up against someone. At the 1-3 table, you'll get 3-6 callers on a regular basis. So when you hit your hands you make a good amount of change.

My first big hit was when I was dealt Q/K in the hole and a K on board. I raised it up and got a number of callers. Some black kid who had planned this to be his last hand winds up catching an Ace on his next card, and then pairs it on the card after that (the same time I catch a Q for two pair). He keeps calling my bets and raises me on 6th street. On the river I catch another King in the hole and bet out, he raises, I re-raise, he re-raises. He flips over his trip Aces and I show him the boat and take down a nice pot.

Another nice hand was when I was dealt 4/4 in the hole and a 9 on the board. I pair my 9's on the next card and bet out, and get about 4 callers. then I catch a 9 on the board again, showing trips (wish I had caught a 4 on the board, but oh well). I get one caller, who calls me all the way to the river. He had an 8/4 of spades on the board, and a 5/7 of spades in the hole. He was chasing that one 6 of spades to try and straight flush and beat me, and he paid to try it.

This one fat guy at the end of the table always assumed I had nothing, always figured me for a bluffer. He'd just call and call with terrible hands. One hand I was dealt Q/Q in the hole and an 8 on the board. I raised it up and he called. Then I catch a 5 and keep betting, then pair my 8's and keep betting again. He said "all you've got is those 8's" but he laid down.

One bad hand saw me catch 10/J/Q/8/K and I desperately needed a 9 or an Ace. Well, the lady I was up against wound up catching two Aces on the board.......and she had the other two in the hole! Good thing I never caught my straight. All-in-all, a good time. Didn't get around to playing any tournaments or satellites to the main event, but I'm happy with my take for the day, makes up for me missing work today.

18 is a good number to do. We have a decent secondary list so just have them as just that, secondary. I am sure we'll see some backing out as we draw closer anyway. Kilgore, I would possibly drop a PM to those in red as they may not frequent the OOT board or seen the developments in this thread.

I'd be down to having my custom table transported if necessary. But yeah, it's probably best to just keep it at 18 players and go from there. I can't tell you how many times I've had new players request I open up a third table in my place because they don't want to be on the wait list. Guess they don't realize how much trouble it is running one of these things. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Word on the street is that the guy I need to watch out for is JoeTall, if he can make it.

I think I know what I need to do to beat you folks. I'll need to adopt the "Kasuba Super System". It's this kid that comes to my games and plays stupid, but you see.....it's a system.

If I raise pre-flop with A/10 he'll call me with J/5. Then the flop is 5/A/5 and he gets me. But he'll give my chips away later when the flop is Q/Q/10 and he had K/2 and another player pushes all-in who's holding a Queen.

Then again, he also believes that if he plays 10 numbers on roulette, and hits 1 in 4 times he'll gain a 3% edge over the house. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hey kids.

I'm in Vegas through the 5th. I found out from Gator that he can't make it on the 23rd, so it looks like 27o is in for sure. I'll have to check the list when I get back home to see if anyone else has dropped out.

Been having a great time out here. Had a good first couple of sessions, took it on the chin yesterday, and logged a solid four hours so far today, up a rack and a half. Trip reports are in the NVG forum.

I'm still stuck for the trip so far, after yesterday's beating, but I'm clawing my way back.

I can't friggin wait to play this 2+2 event. Getting to meet a bunch of local folks will be cool, and trying to compete against people who actually have a clue/understanding of basic and advanced game concepts as well.

Guess my only real shot is to adopt the crazy maniac style and push all you rocks around. *smirk*

Seriously, really looking forward to it, more so than my own home games. I've made plenty of final tables at Dan's place, but have yet to place in the money there, looking to change that this time around.

Dan, is there an updated attendance list available? Who will be my competition?

We better get seated together this time. Each time you've been there we've been at separate tables. And either you bust out or I bust out before we get to combine. So I've only gotten to play against you in side-game action (you won the Omaha Hi/Lo and I took my profit in 7-stud hi/lo or maybe we were playing stud hi only)

Don't forget to throw the match, I've got a wedding coming up October 1st and then a honeymoon after. The 800-900 bucks for first place would certainly help to ease the burden. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Geesh, just finished up 9th (out of 27) in a PokerStars 2000 buy-in (play money, yes, play money, I friggin hate online play, much better live, and online poker is friggin rigged, EVERYONE knows that, they don't call it RiverStars for nothing)

So I'm short-stacked at this table with a douchebag talking about people having his nuts in their mouth, on their chin, etc, etc.

I catch A/A and double through. Next hand I catch K/K and double through. Then I catch 10/10 and raise just like I had the previous two hands, and the "nutz monsta" pushes all-in on me. I of course call and see he's gone all-in with A/5 offsuit. Flop is A/J/5 (all clubs) so I'm feeling flushed and a 10 would do it too, but it doesn't happen.

He takes back the chip lead. Make it to the final table and I'm short-stacked (only about 1800 chips left) and in first position I find 9/9 and raise it from 200 to 600. Get a caller and then "Deez Nutz" pushes all-in. I insta-call his ass and he shows Q/J offsuit.

Flop is A/K/3 with two spades, turn is a 3 and he rivers a 10 for the straight to take me down. Then he proceeds to type up a storm about what a great player he is, his nuts are in my mouth, etc. I just LOVE online poker.

The 10K buy-in events aren't much better either. Won a bunch yesterday, today I've finished twice on the bubble and keep having the best hand cracked. Just another day of poker I suppose. Can't wait to take some fishies money tomorrow at my home game, and then hopefully not run into any "Deez nutz" characters at Dan's. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey everyone. He's a newbie in these forums and he's been fairly quiet in this thread. Just met him last night when he played in my home game (he finished up 9th out of 15 if I recall correctly (I took 4th place when my short-stacked J/J ran into an A/J that caught)

I didn't get the opportunity to play against him, we were at separate tables, but he's a good guy and you'll all like him (unless you're pricks, then you probably don't like anybody). /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Anyway, make sure Toro gets seated at my table this time, never got to play with the guy. And make sure he's got a steady supply of fresh brews to keep him "thinking straight".

And no JoeTall at my table. First, why would I want to be up against a pro? Second, I'm 4 foot nuttin, I don't like tall people.

One note about the side games. My intent was to limit the buy in to $100 for the cash games. You may rebuy up to the amount of your initial buy in at any time, obviously. Thought I'd keep the stakes low so that high rollers like Toro and crunchster couldn't bully the rest of us mere mortals too much.

Recently Greg (Fossilman) Raymer confirmed that he will indeed be attending the $100 Central MA 2+2 Challenge, and will be funding a $10,000+$200 bounty on himself to encourage "action" at the table.

Mr. Raymer was quoted as saying "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play against some of the greatest competition that Central Massachusetts has to offer. I may be a World Champion, but beating this game is going to take all of the skills and fortitude I can muster"

Not to hijack my own thread, but...

I listened to the 2nd inning at lunch today. Joe & Gerry were really getting on the plate ump. Said Schilling was getting squeezed.

It also seems to be the approach of opposing teams to make Schilling work moreso than in the past. 112 pitches in 5 innings is evidence of that.

This is only his second start against major league batters, too. Not much we can read into it. If his numbers haven't improved by Memorial Day, then it's time to start worrying.

I expect we'll see similar patterns with Miller when he returns from rehab.

I would think the player with more chips. Otherwise, let's say you have 27K in chips and a short-stack has 3K and you both get wiped on the same hand. How would it be fair for you to split the prize?

It's Dans game, but I'm guessing it would be just like the casinos.

About as fair as the 27K stack getting eliminated by a bigger stack while the 3K stack sits out the hand. Size of stack before the hand doesn't mean much, imo.

Either rule is fine, as long as it is annouced ahead of time.

In my experience:

If you are both at the same table and can see the amount each person has, and you both go out on the same hand, the larger chip stack gets the better finishing position.

If you're both at separate tables and go out on the same hand (hand for hand play) then you would split (if there was money involved, but since only four of us are getting paid this won't be a problem)

Wow, what a frigging awesome time I had at Dan's. It was great to meet everyone, you're an awesome group of guys (we seriously need to find some hot asian triplets that play though)

Anyway, sorry for my constant barrage of inane banter, I just like to talk it up and have a fun time, keep things light.

I've gotta say, it was pretty fun sucking out on JoeTall (I was short-stacked with 4700 chips left and pushed all-in with K/Q and he had Q/Q and I caught my King on the river) but it wasn't fun being on the receiving end (I had A/K in the BB with only 2400 chips and the blinds at 700/1400 and no other callers, pushed all-in and got called by both the SB and BB who had substantial stacks, ran into Myrtle who held J/4 and flopped two pair, my King on the river wasn't good enough to beat that)

I made a $40 profit in the side game, which was cool. We played some 7-stud at first and I was up 30 bucks. Then we switched to limit hold em, and I dropped to down 50 bucks at one point, but eventually turned a profit, busting Stan's A/K with my J/Q on a Queen-high flop. I also took down the last hand of the night, when I had K/7 and the flop was 7-high, and JoeTall tried to re-raise me with his A/2 and there was a 2 on the flop.

Anyway, again, had a great time and it was awesome to meet everyone. Dan said it would be nice if we can switch up the events to other locations, and I'd be happy to host the next event (not sure when, but I can let you all know)

I'm limited to 16 players, and I might do the blind/ante structure a bit different, I'll let you all know what I come up with. I'm out in Gardner, so 40 minutes West of Dan's place.

And props to MeatBag, guy went all-in short-stacked with Q/Q and JoeTall caught a set of 6's to bust him. You can't fault the guy for going out with a hand like that, Q/Q was just no good. I personally would catch A/Q and other pretty decent hands, but after I'd raise it would get re-raised by people holding A/K or K/K and I'd have to fold. Bled off a lot of chips on hands like that unfortunately.

First off, a BIG thanks to Dan(Kilgore Trout)and his lovely wife for allowing all of us degenerate poker players into their home for the tournament.

I was one of the later arrivals due to taking a wrong turn and having to ask a mailman where the street was. Got introduced to everyone and since Dan had made up clip on badges with our 2+2 nicks and avatars on them it was easy to match up faces with posters. Your seat draw came with your tourney chips and though there were no weakies at my table, I wasn't disapointed to see Myrtle, Toro and JoeTall draw the other table.

Tourney format was $100 buy in for 10K chips with blinds starting at 50-100 and escalating every 15 minutes. Right before we started a suggestion was made that we all place a $20 bounty on ourselves, payable to the player who knocked you out. This was unanimously agreed upon.

Tourney started out just like any other 2+2 tourney I've been invloved in. You steal the blinds, I steal the blinds, he steals the blinds, somebody at the other end of the table steals the blinds, repeat. It was very obvious that no one wanted to be first out of this one. I picked up AA on the third hand dealt and managed to get $300 from Mr moo2 before he folded on a Jxx flop but this was the only good hand I saw before the first break and my chip count was ~$7000 at that point. No one yet eliminated.

In the second round(pre pizza delivery)I was just card dead. Two low unsuited cards followed by Q-3o, etc. Dan and SlowPlayRay were in the same situation, being blinded down with no bullets to shoot back. The good news was no one at the table had been able to establish a dominant position yet so we still had enough chips to not be bullied every hand. At the other table, ghettorat was building a nice stack and there had been a couple of all ins but they survived so we went to the second break with both tables still full.

In stage 3 the escalating blinds finally started taking their toll. Lazy Meatball was first out when his QQ was no match for JoeTall's set of 6's. On table 1, Chrunchster, Slow Play Ray, Dan and 27offsuit went out and we were down to 10 for the final table.

Final table lineup:
MrMoo2
kdog
JoeTall
Ilya
Frank D.
Dr. Jekyl
ghettorat...chip leader
Myrtle
Suited Deuce
Yeah, I know that's only 9. My apologies to whoever I forgot.

The first big confrontation was when JoeTall(2nd in chips) moved in on the button with Q-Js and was called by Ilya with pocket 7's which held up and vaulted Ilya into the top three chip leaders. I was still getting nothing playable although I did manage one double up to get my stack around $6000.

With blinds at (I think) 500/1000 and it folded around to me, I moved in on the button with Q-Jo against an even shorter stacked JoeTall who called with pocket deuces. A jack hit on the flop, eliminating Joe and starting a nice turn around for me. I started getting some good cards, a big hand came up where Mr Moo2 raised to $10,000 under the gun with K-Qo, Frank D. reraised all in with A-10o and Suited Deuces called all in with pocket 8's.When they turned the hands up I was kicking myself for mucking A-Qo. I was first to act after Mr Moo2's raise. The size of the raise relative to his stack convinced me he had either AK or a very high pocket pair and wanted action to the hand. Good raise dude! Worked out well for him too as he sucked out a gutshot on the river /images/graemlins/blush.gif and we were down to five. Bubble time.

After another smoke and potty break we traded blinds for a few hands before Myrtle, who was the short stack pushed all in from utg with 9-7o. I looked down at AK, reraised all in and for probably the first time ever, came out on top in a heads up confrontation with him. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Down to the money. Everybody still has a decent amount of chips and nobody is even THINKING about a deal.

ghettorat went out next when my JJ held up against his all in desperation steal attempt and we were down to MrMoo2, myself and Ilya, with me as chip leader.

MrMoo2 went out in third. He picked the wrong time to go card dead and finally moved in with K-9o, but I had him dominated with K-10s and a 10 on the flop sealed his fate.

Ilya and I swapped a few blinds before he moved in with K-Jo, which I immediately called with A-Qs. Ace on the flop, no gutshot catch on the river for him, after 7 hours it's over, and I get to write the longest post I've ever written here. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had a great time, got to meet a great bunch of guys(but I already knew you were) and I'm already looking forward to defending my title. So until the next time....HAHA, I'm the CHAMP!

After enough of us losers busted out, we got a live $2/4 limit Holdem game going. Only problem was that AJ kept going into 5 minute think tanks to consider if he should call every time he faced a $4 bet.

I will consider the day a rousing success if I was able to break you of this habit when playing limit. Probably not, Mr. Chatterbox, but at least everyone got some good laughs when I was yelling at you.

nice work kdog.

and thanks again to dan and "the warden" for hosting us. it was a great time, and i look forward to seeing everyone for #2. maybe next time i won't have to spend my entire tournament short-stacked and struggling just to not be the 1st one out (thanks for bailing me out meatball!).

Thought I would post a hand that some including myself might second guess my play. We were early, first level, 50/100 blinds and we started with 10K chips. I was UTG and with AKo raised to 300. Folded to Lazymeatball in MP and he re-raised to 900 and folded back to me. I looked him over and he looked very strong.

I thought it was very possible he had AA or KK. Being out of position and since it was so early, I decided to fold. I wanted to know what he had so I folded face up since a lot of player will show after you show.

Lazymeatball cooperated and showed his AKo which I didn't enjoy seeing but the more I thought about it, i think I saved the 600 raise. Since we both had AK, it's likely we both miss the flop and if he fires at the pot after my inevitable check I would have had to fold.

Be interested how many would a) fold as I did or b) call and see a flop or c) play the hand super strong and re-re-raise.

As I said at the time....still feel the same way now.....

I'd let it go as IMO it is too early in the tournament to get involved.

Had you chosen to play it however, it think it's strong RR time.

It's a good lay down. Facing a raise from players like us (i.e. not crazy loosey goosey players who will re-raise you with A/3 SOOTED) it's likely you're up against another A/K or a pair. It was a good lay down, despite what was shown.

Kinda how I was short-stacked and in the BB with 1200 invested, and there was a raise and then a re-raise. I hated that, I SO wanted to make a stand there, but just couldn't.

Myrtle, congrats for busting me out and snagging my bounty. You looked like you were considering folding and saving yourself the 1000 dollars, but it paid off quite nicely on that flop. At least if you had just caught one pair I would've had some chance. Ah well, good game, hopefully I can redeem myself next time (now everyone get over to the new thread and post some ideas!)

....not considering folding....just counting the pot....slowly....to ensure whether my initial guesstimate at the pot odds was accurate. It was, and I called.

To be honest, I believe I misplayed the hand after flopping the 2 pair tho...

I though other player would read me for a steal with my allin and call....

I was clearly wrong.

Maybe GhettoRat was only pretending to be a Yankees fan? I mean, otherwise your read would've been spot-on and he'd call you with undercards (cause Yankees fans sho' be crazy!)

By the way, thank you for pointing out the issue with asking for a countdown of chips on an all-in player. I never even thought of it like that until you pointed it out, and I'll make use of that in my home games (although it would be rare to find anyone at my home game calculating pot odds or considering anything but their own two cards)

I'm still wondering if I made the correct fold when I raised preflop (not that I ever did that before /images/graemlins/smirk.gif) after AJ limped.

You called in the BB and the flop came:

A /images/graemlins/spade.gifQ /images/graemlins/spade.gifA /images/graemlins/club.gif

AJ bet out into me (not that he ever did that before /images/graemlins/smirk.gif) I raised, you called 2 cold, AJ folded.

The turn was the 5 /images/graemlins/spade.gif

YOu checked, I checked.

The river was a blank, you bet and I folded KQ.

Great meeting you Toro, good to put a name with the face after all this time!

Great meeting everyone! Thanks to Dan and the commish for letting a bunch of strangers come into their house for the day, I had a blast. I was also exhusted when I got home as I did some serious A-game, thinking yesterday.

As I thought, my tournament added up to a bunch of races and set-ups, however, I did do my share of stealin!

Thanks again,
Joe
