View Full Version : Why is HBO so much better than the other networks

Just about every HBO original series that HBO does is much better than what the standard networks develope. Any ideas why they are so much better than NBC, ABC, CSB & FOX. Is it just being able to say [censored]?

Because if the shows suck people won't pay a monthly fee to see them.

They don't have to be worried about "decency" and thus are subject to fewer creative boundaries than network television.

Now one would think the same could be said about showtime but that network still continues to suck so I guess HBO just hires good people.

Deadwood was good, Carnivale was better.

I start a thread like yours every month or so. I'm a big HBO fan.

It is. The networks are in the business of delivering viewers to advertisers. There is little or no advantage in being edgy or controversial, in pushing boundaries. That stuff is risky and may alienate viewers. Pap is safer, it offends fewer people.

Pay-TV needs people to re-up every month. They need to hook people, and they can have one show that hooks one set of people, and another show that hooks a completely different set of people. Doesn't matter if each of those sets is offended by the other's show. They'll re-up so they can watch their show. Different business model, resulting in a qualtiatively different product.

Why HBO outdoes Showtime, I could only guess.

Both were good. I watch CYE everyday and like Unscripted as well.

Sopranos and Oz are two of my all time favorite shows.

Also if you are boxing fan I think Legendary Nights is a great show.
