I'm sure this has been discussed before, but there's no way I'm skilled enough with the search engine to find anything useful with the query "2+2".

Anyone know why the name '2+2' was chosen? Is it even poker-related?

edit: Sorry, meant to put this in OOT but absent-mindedly clicked on the wrong forum.

I always assumed David and Mason were big "1984" fans.

their books are as simple to read and understand as 2+2=4. I think that's the point of it. at least that's what I read

2+2=4 has nothing to do with 1984.

That was 2+2=5

Don't be retarded, then. Read the book /images/graemlins/wink.gif

The correct answer is that 2+2=4 basically says "It's math, stupid".

“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows” (p. 81)

I don't know the reason Mason made the name. But, Mason did make a post where he told a story of showing an early book to David. David asked what the 2+2 logo was.

That's a good indication for how 2+2 is run.

I would disagree. I think 2+2=4 has something to do w/ 1984 (maybe not in the context of the publishing company). I think dismissing this possibility is simplistic.

It's only been 20+ years since I read the book, but IIRC, if you were caught by the mind police, you were taken to a detainment facility to be "retrained". You were asked what 2+2 was. And of course the answer was 4, but the government wanted you to believe it was 5. If they could get this much hold upon you to change simple math in your mind and for you to believe that 2+2 was 5, then they knew that they had the upper hand. For someone to continue to answer 2+2=4, then the gov. didn't have control over you.

So, I say, 2+2=4, and it will always be. It's a sign of strength against the oppressing forces (big brother is watching).

I thought it was because 2*(number of outs)+2= approx percent of hitting

2+2=4 it's simple it's straightfoward, i've read it somewhere directly from mason. i have absolutely no evidence to back it up but i'm like 99% sure.
