A couple visiting an animal reserve have an unfortunate experience (http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20050304-0117-ca-chimpanzeeattack.html).

Read this (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_001b.html) for a little insight into how strong these mofos are.

Harper's (no link unfortunately) had a short article a month or so back about other species which engaged in war. Chimpanzees and wolves lead all other animals in deaths from intraspecies violence. Chimps get special note for their savagery and tool using ability. In the first link it seems that they weren't just interested in killing the man but in mutilating him.

On a related note, keeping a chimpanzee as a domestic pet is not recommended. When fully grown they have the emotional maturity of a two year old and relentlessly look to dominate. Apparently, they can be quite intimidating. Also, monkeys can not be potty trained.
