Okay, so I tried playing online for the first time and lost. I play mostly no limit with my friends, but when I first tried playing online I was intimidated by the NL tables, so I played low limit, because it just looked less intimidating. Sadly, I didn't realize that you can't play limit like you play NL. So, I went in there and lost my $50 over a few days. The thing is, I have no experience playing low limit...so I shouldn't have even been in there in the first place. I tried playing NL with my bonus $10 and I quickly doubled it, but then stupidly went all-in on a poor hand. I was emotionally upset for losing my money in the low limit table...I was definitely on the tilt. Heck, I probably sound like a terrible player, but I think I'm better than the way I look. However, I want to hone my skills for playing on the net. Most of my experience comes from playing with friends, and I usually come out winning, but that's not saying much. Anyway, I'd like to try playing online again. Should I pick up "Harrington on Hold'em"? What books will help improve my game?

You will need more than $50 to play online, on the low limits people are able to just suck out on you too easily. Sure, any boks will help you now.

Buy anything by 2+2 especially "Small Stakes Hold'em." This book is written specifically for beating low limit games. I don't think your problem is that you are playing online, it is probably just lack of experience and you are definitely under bankrolled. If you are a serious player you should have minimum 300 big bets for which ever limit you play (300 for .5/1).

If you want to play limit poker, then the first book you should get is "Winning Low Limit Hold Em" By Lee Jones (not a 2+2 book... sorry). It will teach you how to play winning poker, but not how to crush the game. But it's a much safer and more stable base to start from then jumping right into Ed Miller's Small Stakes Hold Em book. Once you've read Lee Jones a few times, and your online bankroll is consistently growing, *then* read Small Stakes Hold em by Ed Miller. It'll teach you some more optimized thinking geared towards low limit games.

If you want to start out playing no limit, then I'm not sure what books to read. The above two may be a good start, but they definitely aren't geared towards no limit, so you'll have to be very careful how you apply them to the game.

Since the player pool is so large (worldwide) I have found that online games are much tougher than casino games at the same limits, let alone home games. I really had to improve my game b4 I felt cmfortable enough to go back online. At the very least make sure you read and can apply the concepts in 2+2s Holdem, Advanced Holdem, and Small Stakes Holdem books (the last contains info on post-flop play that I have not seen anywhere else)
