I didnt think this guy would call without an ace. He never showed down a bad hand.

I would not have checked the flop. You were not sure where you were in the hand so you checked and so did he. You still don't know how you stand.


IMHO, bet about 2/3 of the pot on the flop to see where you are. If he raises, fold. If he calls, you are through betting and check/fold to his bet.

The blinds are still low, you have plenty of chips. Live to fight another day.

This is the primary reason it's important to recognize why raising here can throw off a weak Ace. IMO, you raise the flop or fold it. If you're reraised, you fold. Villain has no idea what you have. In this scenario, hindsight being 20/20, he might wonder with a flop raise, "does he have AK?"

You cannot win here unless you bet/raise. You don't always have to have the best hand to win a pot. Much of the time, the guy (or gal) with the biggest balls wins.

Essentially, reading your play here was like watching someone pull money out of someone else's ATM.
