Cribbage!

My girlfriend and I started playing about 6 months ago. Love it. Bought DeLynn Colvert's book and that has helped quite a bit. Anyone up for a game on Yahoo or Pogo sometime?

What do you think the best two person card game is? (no heads up NL answers /images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Cribbage is the best conventional card game for two players. My family invented a form of two person pinochle that I find more fun, though.

Yeah, a vote for Cribbage!

I've played the 2-person Pinochle as noted in Hoyle's. Not quite as fun.

Does anyone play Klabberjass? Pretty cool.

Been playing ever since I could add. My family always plays for money. Buck a game with "setback" meaning if you're tied atthe end of the hand you start all over again on the same deal progession. Stakes double for each setback (1-2-4-8-etc). Skunks double and double skunks quadrouple.

I think my cribbage upbringing explains why I play poker now.

?? In cribbage there is a pegboard that you keep score on. It is very common to be at the exact same distance from the end ie "tied" when a hand winds up. What game are you playing?

No. Is there any money in it? (I've been entertaining the idea of crushing some online crib if it's out there. I never really researched it though.)

I'd rather play full-ring (or 6-max) poker as it's more interesting than cribbage. Two player I'd rather play cribbage.

Bezique.

Winston Churchill's facourite game!

Almost forgotten about these days, although you can pick up the specialised antique packs of cards (2 packs, with only Ace through seven) with funky scorecards on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=69691&item=6515971 636&rd=1) pretty cheap.

If you enjoy 2 player card games, its definately worth a go.

How is this a tie? The first person to peg past 120 wins, whether during the pegging or counting of hands.

If you both land on 118 or so, that is not a tie. What happens if you are all tied up at say 79 points, do you start over?

To answer your question, yes. You are correct that a game cannot end in a tie but hands often do.

You start over if at any time after the crib is counted (the end of a hand when someone is supposed to shuffle) both players are at the same spot on the peg board. Whoever was supposed to deal deals as normal except both players start from the beginning and the stakes from the previous game double. This can happen after the first hand or the last one on peg 120. Makes for some big games and exciting saves going down the stretch. (When someone who was due to count first on the next hand and has only 6 pegs to go suddenly gets setback to the beginning it gets real intersting)

Sometimes we'll play 10 games and never have a single setback. Other times we'll get setback 5 times in one game and be playing for $32.

It is a game called gops.

You separate the four suits. You discard the hearts as they take no part in the game. Each player takes one of the dark suits. The diamonds are shuffled and placed face down in the middle of the table. They are turned up one at a time. As a diamond is turned up each player using his/her best judgment plays a card from his/her hand in order to win the diamond these cards are played face down to the diamond. When both players have played a card thus they are turned up and whoever played the higher card wins the diamond. Then the next diamond is turned over and bid for in the exact same manner. The winner is the first to win 46 points in diamonds with the K=13, Q=12, J=11 and alll other cards at pip value with the Ace being worth one. Each player has ninety-one points in his hand to win forty six points in diamonds. If any diamond is unwon as the two cards played to it turn out to be equal then the next diamond is upturned and two fresh cards are played face down to the diamonds and whoever now has played the higher card wins the two diamond cards (or more). When a card is played towards a diamond it goes out of play. So your hand starts with thirteen cards and ends up with none.

I will not advise you on the strategy as that would spoil your enjoyment in discovering it.

I've never heard this variation on cribbage. Sounds interesting as I usually do play for money, with skunks and double skunks paying the bills.

This sounds almost like a game theory question. Since no one acts first and all other things being equal, the optimal game must end in a tie.

i like cribbage and whist - my favourite though is a game called xiri that a bunch of greeks taught me

xiri is like snap with skill - requires a sharp memory and has a decent amount of bluffing and what many poker players call second and third level thinking

idea is to score points - first over 150 points wins (or highest score when both are over 150) - all face cards and 10's are 1 point, 2 of clubs and 10 of diamonds are worth 2 - deal 6 cards each, then 4 face up, and then 1 face up under the deck at 90 degrees - if the top card of the 4 face up cards is a jack place it with the card under the deck and replace it with another card from the deck (repeat till the top card of the 4 face up cards is not a jack)

non dealer must then place any of his 6 cards on top of the 4 face up cards (you must take it in turns to deal) - if it matches the top card by rank then that player takes all those cards - like snap - the players take it in turns placing cards on the pile in the middle - if they match the top card they take the accumulated pile - if any player plays a jack it takes the accumulated pile

after exhausting the initial deal of 6 cards deal 6 more each - after 3 rounds of 6 cards each the dealer places the cards that were left under the deck face up in his final round hand - if there is a pile left after all cards have been played it is taken by the player who last took the accumulated pile

a xiri is acheived when any player matches a card when it is the only card in the pile and is worth 10 points (it is usual to place one of the cards that completed the xiri face up at 90 degrees under the cards you have won) - in addition to counting the points at the end of the hand that are contained in captured piles the person with the most cards gets 6 points (the easiest way to score at the end is for the player with the least cards to add up their points and deduct from 25 to get their opponents points and then add on any xiris)

other bizarro scoring rules are that a xiri with a jack is worth 25 points and getting all the cards is worth 50

You would only resort to game theory if you could not make a better play based on what you know about your opponent's playing style (as in poker). If you consistently played to game theory without regard to your opponent's playing style then he would play to the score and win repeatedly.

You are right in that it is a guessing game in essence though there is a lot to its play and very little in print about its strategic/tactical elements.

It also has a three-handed form where you give the hearts to a third player and play upto 31 but that is not as skillful and diamonds get tied with regularity.

Gops is a cardplayer's card game.
