What do you guys care more about in determining how loose you're going to play? My friend who is pretty much my poker mentor says he tries to keep his stack about 1/5 over the avg no matter what the blinds are in relation to his stack. Does that strategy have any merit? I was a little confused because all I had been worrying about was my stack in relation to the blinds.

No, that's stupid.

Your stack will be above and below average many times in a tournament. You can't control your cards and while you may have a stack half of that of average late in a tourney, one double up and you're there.

Yes, think in terms of the blinds and your stack. When you're 10xbb or less, it's time to make a move.

Blinds, average stack really doesnt matter to me as long as blinds are low and I have time.
