View Full Version : Why 6/12 but no 5/10?

Was at the Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleasant, MI this weekend playing 3/6 (they were god awful BTW, maybe a trip report in B&M later). I had contemplated playing 6/12 but didn't really have the roll. Here's my question: Why a 6/12 but no 5/10 game? I'm positive I read on 2+2 somewhere that the odd combo actually increases action, but I have no conclusive evidence. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Note: I was on a sweet run and won 2 hands in 3.5 hours against a bunch of 3rd graders. Yippie! /images/graemlins/mad.gif

It has to do with the number of chips in the middle.

In a $6/12 game that uses $2 chips, a $120 dollar pot would contain 60 chips.

In a 5/10 game with $5 chips, a $100 pot would contain just 20 chips.

When you are sitting at the table, a pot with an assload of chips looks "bigger" then one with a lesser number of chips. The hypothesis is that the increased number of chips in the middle creates more action.

If I may add to this question, why are 4/8 games also uncommon? I see them referenced in my books but online they aren't there.

After I thought about it I don't know what else there could be to it. Seems like it would be a pain in the ass i.e. 8/16 or something god awful like 12/24?

Both exist, as do 9-18 and 16-32.

4/8 is all over the East Coast.

I think 3/6 blinds are even rather than 2/5 blind structure of 5/10.

At 3/6 the blinds are 1/3. Is that more even than 2/5?

The indivdual blinds for 6/12 are 3 and 6 (In some places).

I just got what cvt was saying. 3/6 blinds not 3/6 the game. my mistake.

LOL. I also share this distintion of being in Soaring Eagle casino this past weekend. My wife and I decided to "get a way" for the weekend, we live in Detroit. This was my first time in the poker room here. It was awful. The players were awful, the dealers were awful, and the chips were so dirty they gave my hands a rash!

I sat in the $6-12. I lost $150 in about a half hour. Highlights were getting JJ, and AA cracked by the same highschool kid who sucked out both times on river. He admitted to table that he was a senior in highschool. I guess you only have to be 18 to play in this indian casino. But anyways, I figured I was better off watching my wife lose money on the "wheel of fortune" slots than to play poker here. They don't spread any No Limit, and I'm not that big fan of no foldem holdem. I saw some crazy play to say the least. Unforunatly I couldn't take advantage of it.

But all in all, I was not too happy with this casino. Most of the casino employess and dealers were missing at least one tooth, seriously. The buffet was horrid. The room was decent. Thank god I brought my laptop! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have seen Fianchetto post 16-32 hands. I think he plays somewhere in the Bay Area.

also i've heard that 6/12 generates more tips since 5/10 would be played with 5 dollar chips and people aren't willing to tip the 5 dollar chips.

What do you mean by "all over"? There are two games in the city and one in AC that I can think of.

Every city that I've been to in order to sit down and play poker on the East Coast spreads 4/8.

ive been playing at this casino for about seven years (i turned 18) --- the chips in the poker room can only be used there

i think that the lowest game spread before was 4-8 he and 2-6 stud which used the yellow chips ---

they switched the he to 3-6 and instead of getting rid of the yellow chips, and might have added the 6-12 game

since they spread mainly lower limits, they may have wanted to keep that type of game and not have to replace all those poker chips

not sure though

most dealers are pretty bad there, being a college town and having 18 year min to enter the casino makes for some interesting play

cheers

Foxwoods too. FW and AC are pretty much the East Coast. I think they have it at Turning Stone and Seneca Niagara too.

Are they raking $5? In most places, the rake is reasonable enough that any pot pushed to you in a red chip game is going to contain at least white.

I don't get it. Why is that a pain in the ass or god awful? 8/16 and 12/24 are pretty common limits. At the least, they are more common than 5/10. Why is it a pain in the ass? 8/16 is usually played with $2 chips, so it's a 4 chip/8 chip game just like 4/8, 20/40, 40/80, etc. usually are. Are all of those games a pain in the ass too?

They don't have it at Turning Stone, forgot about FW.

We have 12/24 in Washington State. In addition to the Indian casinos which can spread decent sized games (e.g., I was playing 30/60 at an Indian casino last night), there are legal cardrooms a la California. However, the non-Indian cardrooms aren't allowed to have games with bets of more than $100 and for the purpose of the law, a single betting round is counted as one bet. So, $25 is the largest single bet that is allowed assuming a three-raise cap (which all the cadrooms have; these regulations are why we have a cap even heads up, similar to online cardrooms). This means that 12/24 is the largest game that can be spread without doing something stupid like 12.50/25 (never attempted afaik) or 15/25 (which has been spread). So, there are a few cardrooms out here that have 12/24 games, like Parker's in Shoreline and Diamond Lil's in Renton.
