View Full Version : Mindless at Hollywood Park

Hollywood Park exists. Saying anything more could be misconstrued as some obtuse compliment that this place simply does not deserve. At Hollywood Park the atmosphere is poisonous, the clientele rotten, the staff a pack of goons, the service laughable, and the players inane, with the vastness of the parking lot adding to the general forlorn and forbidding nature of this baroque structure to human idiocy. In other words, I enjoyed the place.

I signed up for the 10/20 and 15/30 games and soon got in the 20 game. As soon as I sat down, and in the very first hand I witnessed, a volcanic eruption occurred over the betting and calling sequence on the turn and river, mainly due to dealer ineptness, player inattentiveness, and the general visceral hatred displayed by all concerned. The floor was called over but this just resulted in even more extensive bickering and in nothing substantial being done except that ‘the camera’ should be looked at etc. It was not resolved until about twenty minutes later. Welcome to California Poker, I thought.

I soon moved to the 30 game. A little less hatred was displayed at this table but more idiocy, if that seems possible, and I assure you it is. I witnessed odd folds, emotional outbursts, boneheaded crying calls, continual juvenile whining, shaking of the noggin in disbelieve and consternation, dealer abuse, and overall brain abuse and mind misuse. The local miscreants were at their best and displayed an ever mounting and seething foolishness that held an almost gaudy and irresistible charm. I was down a little but made a short quick run and ended up in the black a few hundred. My luck changed just as Michael Davis showed up. We caused a ruckus by talking and Michael hanging about behind me for only a few seconds, but enough for the ‘gentlemen’ on my left to post some objections and other irrational loathing towards Mike and I, he was losing and very keyed up. Also, the ‘gentlemen’ to my right shot a parting insult at me as I folded my last hand and left. I simply agreed with his comment. Anyway, I racked up and left after playing for a few hours, if that.

We went to the bar and since I was fighting a cold, I drank tomato juice. I had a very fine and interesting discussion with Michael, which was occasionally made difficult when yelling and whooping erupted over the chariot races beaming from all the TVs. We talked some about poker and other topics. I was certainly glad to meet this bright young man. He was kind enough to give me a lift back to the hotel. By the way, the Marriott by LAX is a 70's style concrete monument to ugliness - A listless building of boring functionality. What exacerbates the vileness of the place is the color - a sticking urine stain, or dull puss yellow, that revolts the eye and arrests the mind. A flaming lime green would have been better; at least it would give the building a blinding gaudiness that would have the redeeming feature of being worth seeing. This hotel is a great big nothing. Sort of like LA. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

welcome to hell aye - actually makes places like the Sahara on the ass end of the strip tolerable-

I know this cause a guy who won a seat in the Commerce WPT satellite decided to stay in vegas before going on to CA - didn't wanna spend 3 extra days there... /images/graemlins/grin.gif and he busted me out on the bubble at Sahara...LOL

any time I get to thinking I'm a bit too proud of being American, I think of So. Cal and acquire a bit of shame back.

HP scares me and I've never even been there. Doesn't look like I'll end up there anytime soon.

Nice work, Zeno. You are truly blessed with the internal depression and self-hatred worthy of an A-1 degenerate. I couldn't be happier for you.

Sorry I missed you. What day were you there? There is no 30 at HPC. Good post though.

I took the "20" game to mean the 10-20 and the "30" to mean the 15-30.

thanks mike.

We'll meet up someday, at Andy's house maybe - he can cook us dinner. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

ive been there once. played $3-6
i did not like the blinds structure. $3 BB, $1Sb $1 Button for the jackpot. they are taking a lot off the table. the players at the $3-6 were nice and friendly. an old buddy of mine was playing $100NL and the people there wanted to rip each other's heads off. People were calling and raising out of spite. I couldnt stop laughing.

I'm not senile yet, Gabe. I suspect you misread something in my post. There were 10-20 (or 10/20 etc) 15-30, 20-40 and 40-80 games. Also pot-limit and the announcer screamed incessantly about the no-limit $100 and $200 limited buy in games.

I was at Hollywood Park for a short time on Friday night. I snuck away from a ‘technical seminar’ I was attending. Friday night was the only chance I had to get away and I left early Sunday morning.

I want to get to LA and plan on a trip sometime soon I hope. I will be buying a new rifle with my tax refund and a trip to LA to test out its usefulness in urban warfare has the gist of a logical plan and quick reason to head out to La-La Land.

Very logical, since this is what I posted:

Great read. Reminds me of what I like about LA.

Gabe

I'm sorry. You see, the convention in Los Angeles is to call the games by the lower betting limit. The 20-40 holdem game is called the 20 game, etc. I forgot that some of our more provincial visitors may be unaware of this precept. Please forgive me, as I am old, too.

andyfox
03-02-2005, 01:36 PM
Well, I had to read it twice to get your meaning. Gabe is right in that a) the convention is to refer to 15-30 as the "15" game, not the "30" game; and b) while he's not quite as old as you and I, he's close.

cool, what kind of rifle?

You definitely need to strut about with it and drape bandoliers of ammunition all over your person while doing so.

Hollywood Park is a crap hole. I love it.

Also, I like it how it's mostly scared money and welfare players.

Thanks for the correction Gabe. I was ignorant of the Los Anelegs convention on the quick and dirty name for different games. I think I have goofed on this before. I really don't like the 'LA convention' because I naturally think about games by the big blind etc.

All is forgiven and forgotten. An easy accomplishment for us Old Men.

I'll probably get the Ruger Mini-30 (larger magazines easily available) Rifle (http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=5806&return=Y)

This is an excellent model firearm with enough knockdown power for most things encounter in day-to-day life and it takes standard NATO ammo. Thus making it a wise choice for the tactical and combat minded in addition to being a top-notch gun for all around situations: gaming, protection from government goons, defense against the criminal element (I'm repeating myself somewhat on that one), tactical assault uses, home and national security options in case of take over or invasion by tyrants or religious fanatics, (homegrown or otherwise) and/or power-hungry Chinese warlords, not to mention South American drug Kingpins and the La Costa Nostra.

I apologize if I have inadvertently left out any groups, peoples, or nations. Rest assured, I have a grudge against them all.

Peace is at hand. - Richard Nixon

Enough said, methinks.

In that event you shall have to get to Idaho again. I might, just might have a case of 7.62 ammo. I maybe have a toy that has been sitting for a long while new in its box. I am so lazy that I might not have bothered to shoot such a toy. I would like to see a head to head comparison of a commie workhorse against your sensitive American rifle. Could be fun. 1000 round case waiting to be shot up wastefully through hi cap mags. I have the ammo. You bring whisky and rotting melons.:D /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Different rounds. Sensitive american rifle: 7.62 NATO; commie workhorse: 7.62 short.

the mini 30 is the 7.62X39 not the .308 I think.

I stand corrected; it's right there on the web site. Interesting choice of cartridges. It seems like I once saw a Ruger in .308, but didn't find it on their list. Must be getting old...

Okay, I have to jump in here to mention that I was at HPC last Friday night, and I think I took your seat (were you in the 8 seat?) in the must move game when you departed. This would have been around 10:15 or so. I proceeded to be card-dead for the next two hours, alas.

I didn't notice the other players being any worse than normal. Which is sad, because it means that I've become desensitized to it, and I expect no better from most of them. Sad. But profitable. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Andy, your ignorance is on display. Everyone knows it's much more fun to shoot at people who aren't shooting back! Well, everyone except certain Marine Corps Generals.... /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Zeno

Yes, I was in the eight seat. I never switched my watch to the right time zone so I never knew the correct time. Sounds about right though.

I play poker at infrequently intervals now days so I think that I notice the behavior of individuals more and the contrast is starker between sessions. I notice poker trends as more of a 'punctuated equilibrium' than as a gradual overall change. Thus, poker trends and changes, and players attitudes and behaviors are more pronounce to me than perhaps to others.

By my estimation the majority of players at Hollywood Park were repulsive and repugnant.
