You might consider two very important features of your TV set: The channel change buttons, or the on/off button.

I mean, no one's forcing you to watch. If you dislike it and watch it anyway, it ain't ESPN who needs the clue.

I doubt there will be a season 2, their football drama playmakers was only 1 season. Everyone will probably be dead by the last episode anyways.

Playmakers was very successful and they were definitely headed towards a second season. However the NFL did not like how they were portraying football and since ESPN has many reasons to keep the NFL happy, they did not continue on with a second season. The NFL forced ESPN to cancel the show.

it seems entirely possible the same thing could happen with harrah's putting pressure on espn to cut tilt. conceivable, anyhow, right?

your post seemed to indicate that that was an entirely situation. it's not, really.

Tilt has only increased the popularity of poker if anything. Playmakers showed more of the dirt that exists under the surface in the NFL (drug abuse, violence, etc.) The NFL wanted to maintain a positive image because frankly that's good for business. Daniel Negreanu was upset with Tilt because he wasn't aware the show was heading in the direction of collusion and cheating at the tables. He even stated he's never experienced any sort of that while playing in Vegas.

The amount of money Harrah's pays to ESPN is a drop in the ocean compared to the money the NFL brings in.

Besides I'm not sure anyone at Harrah's even knows the rules of poker. They may think it is a team game. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm sure if the ratings are good they'll have no problem going to a second season. As long as poker is popular, why not milk it for all it's worth. I don't really like how they focus on cheating and collusion, because, in the casino, this is virtually non-existant and some people will get the wrong idea. Now if the theme was more about poker played in home games and back rooms.. yeah ok, definitely no stretch there.

Still, they need to make it interesting and it wouldn't be much of a show if the trio just sheared sheep every episode.

I think a very interesting show could be developed that mre realistically portrays the life of high-stakes poker pro's.


Even something along the lines of Jesse May's book Shut up and Deal would be more realistic, more entertaining and significantly less ridiculous.
Long marathon sessions....people going bust on REAL bad-beats...or playing a bit loony and tiltish from drinking or getting stoned.

Anything but the ridiculous table-banter that doesn't come off as realistic to either real poker-players or non-players.


Another take could be showing life on the tourney circuit in general with characters kind of like Hellmuth, Ellix Powers, Matusow, the general respect the poker-community has for Doyle, a poker-playing Mom like Annie duke, etc.

It wouldn't be too tough to twist a lot of these ideas around and make it semi-original while still keeping it interesting.

If you want murder and intrgiue and action and stuff like that then you could borrow from more realistic examples like Benny murder trial (postiviely 5th street).


There's no doubt in my mind that a more correct portrayal of poker...from whatever angle...would be far more entertaning and interesting a TV show for poker and non-poker playing veiwers alike.



I thought one of the best scenes from rounders was when many of them were sitting around at the table in AC and various fish plopped down next to them and got picked-off one by one. It was pretty much general table-chat and fold, fold, fold followed by some occasional profits in there fromn the tourists.
It wasn't completely realistic to grinding it out in limit-poker....but I sure thought it was reasonably close and was a very good scene.
