If you watched the Poker By The Book event of the WPT, you will remember Sklansky more for mucking AKo than winning the damn thing. So why did he muck.
First, Sklansky is known as a very tight player, especially by those who were sitting at the table with him. He is a thinking player, crunching numbers and using the psychological aspect of poker. This is something T.J. Cloutier understands and Sklansky knows that T.J. understands. So normally T.J. would give Sklansky nothing but credit for a big hand and fold. Sklansky knows this, too. But this is what T.J. used to his advantage. By making this play, T.J. pyschologically told Sklanksy that he could beat AK and was holding a very big hand himself becuase Sklansky knows that T.J. knows that he would not raised UTG with nothing less. T.J. told himself that Sklansky was not holding JJs, QQs, KKs, or AAs. Sklansky probably put T.J. on QQ, JJ, or any middle pair and knew that if he missed the flop, T.J. would make him commit alot of chips to see 4th and 5th street. Brilliant play, T.J.
