Yeah, when I saw that, first thing I thought of was in highscool our 2 running backs ran about a 4.8-4.9, and neither of them even played in college.

This guys NFL career died before it started.

understand the 40 means nothing. He ran a 4.6 last year. also, maurice has not had real training for a full year.

he owned in college and without him osu had would not have been close to a title.

Is this the same Clarett who missed half of the undefeated season (3 games, two half games)? Sure, he was real important.

I think the person most responsible for that championship was a certain referee in the Fiesta Bowl.

Victor

your math skills are lacking. osu played 14 games. clarett missed 3 full games and 2 half games for 4 total. perhaps you should be held back for advanced algebra as freshman level calc may be above your level.

As an avid football fan/draftnik I have a question to ask you: how often does a RB run 40 yards in a straight line? Lateral quickness and the ability to accelerate quickly in space is a lot more important than the 40. About the only time the 40 is useful for a RB is when he's broke past the secondary and it's a footrace to the endzone. Fact of the matter is Maurice was the #1 rated talent at his position coming out of high school, and a top 50 prospect overall. He's a very good football player with a lot of upside, personal issues aside.

He's made some extremely poor decisions, but it doesn't change the fact that he's a talented guy. He's likely a 5th or 6th rounder now, unless he runs a 4.6 or so in his pro day at Ohio State, and will enter the NFL as a backup. I wouldn't be suprised at all though if he becomes a starter somewhere in the not-so-distant future though.

Marcus Allen ran a 4.7/4.8 coming out of college, and probably close to a 5.0 at the end of his career. He's a HOFer.

I dont think Clarett runs a natural 4.8. He just spent way too much of his freedom getting jacked and I think it's had its drawbacks.

That said, did anyone expect better than 4.55? He's a pure power guy. His hype basically made every casual fan think he was some sort of a superback (along the lines of Adrian Peterson). He ran behind a line of all-conference juniors and did nothing in the Miami game except finish off drives with goal line runs and strip the ball away from Sean Taylor.

Not lettling him miss practice to go to a friends funeral? Osu treated him like crap, and then sacrificed him to avoid a monster scandal. When stuff like this happens so many people want to blame an emotional 19 year old who really doesnt know how things work. Instead of the professionals who run the school, have done for years, and are constantly breaking/bending rules.

40 times are meaningless. What's more important is that the kid blew off the rest of the workout. I saw Clarette run over WSU in his first game. He was very impressive, but it wasn't speed, it was strength.

There's no way I'd draft a kid who had one good season under his belt and hasn't played football in 2 years.

chaas4747
03-01-2005, 11:58 AM
Not to defend Maurice(I still think he is a jackass), but I ran a 4.6 in HS, in College I was a 4.7, and whe I was timed by the Lions 4.85. I was much faster in college than I was in HS. Your average HS coach really does not know how the NFL scouts time people. This is why when I hear a person in the NFL running a 4.4, I know that fucker is smoking.

Jesus Jose, I hope that's a typo.

Yeah, Rome busted him out on this. Jose said I ran a 3.8 (which would be a world record, and almost impossible, no scratch that is impossible). He also stated he could still run a 4 flat. Rome just sat there looking at him for about 10 seconds, and said "No you can't". Truth of the matter is the fasted guy in the NFL right now ran a 4.12 last year. That is amazing.

The 10 yard dash/short shuttle and cone drills are a lot more relevant times for RBs, which is why at the combine they have scouts at the 10, 20, and 40 yard mark at the dash.
