View Full Version : Thoughts about comic strips..

'The Far Side' was very good, but not nearly as brilliant as people made it out to be.

'Calvin & Hobbes' was simply brilliant.

Garfield and Peanuts are the most overrated pieces of dogsh*t I have ever read. How those strips ever became popular in the first place astounds me.

Does anyone actually read Mary Worth?

Dilbert is the "Napoleon Dynamite" of comic strips.... you either love it (like me) or hate it (like my parents).

Any others? Thoughts?

Bloom county was my favorite of all time. Berke Breathed's work since is too disjointed for my taste.

Ahhh, Ziggy... forgot about that. That strip was great.

I'm a huge fan of Fox Trot.

Adam@home is pretty funny.

Arlo and Janis.

Baby Blues.

I'll tell you what I hate: Cathy.

I always enjoyed Doonsberry. After Hunter S. Thompson died I found out that Uncle Duke was based on him.

Duh, FoxTrot.. that strip is awesome... one of the few strips that I read nowadays. I've probably forgotten so many more that I should have mentioned.

The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, and Dilbert. Everything else sucks ass. Well, This Modern World is funny, but I dunno if that counts since it's just current politics.

Different guys. I will second Bloom County as an awesome strip. Breathed could do absurdist stuff, social commentary and political satire, and make them funny.

My personal comic strip pantheon:

1. Far Side
2. Bloom County
3. Calvin and Hobbes
4. Mary Worth

Just kidding about the last one.

I own just about all the FoxTrot books, love all of them.... but I think I laugh maybe once per three books. They arent funny at all... just good to read.

I always wonder why I like FoxTrot so much. I feel like if I had to defend as to why it is good I would have nothing to say.

Calvin & Hobbes is far and away #1. I'd pay Bill Watterson $1,000 to do five more years.

I agree with Calvin and Hobbes being awesome. Frazz is a recent strip which owes a lot to C&H but is also good.

Peanuts used to be good, way back in the day. It had a clever, subtle humor. The later stuff was dreck.

A few points.

Fox Trot- WTF? That his horrible.

Bloom County is so damn derrivative of Doonesbury it's embarassing.

To me, any list that doesn't start with Calvin and Hobbes and Doonesbury in the 1 and 2 spots is flawed.

Bloom County

Nailed it on the head , all 3 times. I laugh out loud a lot readig Dilbert. I wasn't huge d.berry fan cause not real political minded, but they had some pretty good ones once in awhile.

Speaking of Hunter S. , the world is gonna miss him. His neighbors probably won't, but I will.

The only ones I ever liked were Far Side, C and H, and Dilbert - and I have pretty much every book of those. I think I'd put Far Side first, but the fact that I become really, really sad whenever I look at the last Cavin and Hobbes cartoon makes me question that choice.
