You don't make that bet to scare them off of those hands, you make it to try and see where they are at. Sometimes people will miss their PPs and fold, other times it will be overcards.

I like the play. By betting out in front of him, you get the information you need at a cheaper price. If you had checked to the pre flop raiser, he probably would have bet with anything and you have no info, until you either raise, or see his actions on the next card, which costs more money to get the same information. Assuming he was a solid player, and he sees you as a solid player (since you had no reads), the fold to the reraise was easy - overpair or aj.
