Am thinking of going for the Harman Soundsticks II

but

I will spend much of the next two years travelling. So, what I also want to know is, how rapidly does the price of speakers drops. i.e. I need a new P.C, but because P.C technology advances rapidly, I am holding back, becuase with all the travelling it is better just to buy one when I am settled.

Klipsch. You won't be sorry. Unlike many PC peripherals, you'll get your moneys worth for a long time.

If you are looking at 2.1's go with the best by far.

Are these good for using with a laptop, where the only sound output comes from a headphone port?

They plug in through the headphone jack so yes.

This just means that it comes with two speakers that sit on your desk and then there is a sub woofer that you usually put under the desk. These are usually what you are looking for when trying to get computer speakers unless you only want a few small speakers to travel with or something [they mostly suck] or you want surround sound in which case you would want 5.1 [5 speakers, 1 sub]

Two speakers, and a subwoofer.

Everything I'm getting on the soundsticks is Mac related. Dunno if speakers go both ways. After checking Maximum PC's reviews the 2.1's Emmitt suggest get really high marks and the 5.1 version get's the highest mark of any speaker set in two years. So they must be good. The geeks over at Max PC are usually reliable.

Soundsticks work on PC's, I think they are kinda wierd/ugly though. They would look slightly better with a Mac though.

Im not sure what your price range is, but if money is not an issue, do not buy speakers that are sold at places like circuit city like someone in this thread mentioned earlier. Buy a nice receiver, some nice 300-1000 dollar normal speakers, and use a converter to hook them up to your comp. Best way to go. Pc speakers for the most part are a joke.

If you are looking for something small and portable while moving, I would recommend the JBL Duet speakers on Amazon. I bought a set for my laptop a few weeks ago and have been very impressed with how they sound for their size. They definately don't have the sound quality of a sub woofer system, or any of the higher end speaks mentioned by others, but for $30 you can't go wrong.

klipsch used to be widely regarded as having the best consumer 2.1 setup.

If you listen to rock, you don't need bass.

for music, swans m200s (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=swans+m200&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froo gler) are really great. from my understanding they're better for music, maybe not as good for dvds/games/etc.

I feel special, I just bought these about a week ago on a whim without any research. Glad to see I made a good choice. Oh, and they sound great.

Hmmm thought this would be a thread about speakers not manufactured in a sweatshop somewhere in SE Asia. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad you like the Swan's. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

From our year old thread on 2.1 and 5.1 computer speakers (http://tinyurl.com/9cywu) on this subforum the top end Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks 213 (http://tinyurl.com/5ahsu) have worked out well for me, as the Swan's just wouldn't fit on my desktop.

PS To expand on Turnipmonsters rec above, go with 2.1 or 2.0 speakers if you are mostly listening to music, and 5.1 if you mostly doing games and movies.
