View Full Version : Which hand would you prefer?

While dual tabling a few mid limit stars games I observed a hand, which, on the river, with the same card, made both the straight and the flush. The straight for QJo and the flush for 42s. Now, I naturally guffawed (as I usually do when I see an inferior hand beat a superior hand) when it dawned upon me that QJo was playing from UTG+1 and 42s was playing from the button.

So, which would you prefer? QJo from UTG+1, or 42s from the button?

99.9% of the time I wouldn't play either hand in those positions.

That being said, I'd prefer the 42s simply because you have better position.

Yeah, I assumed the OP had a few callers between UTG+1 and the button. But this might not be the case. If it was heads-up I'd prefer the QJ, of course...but if 42s was enough for a call on the button, there must have been some callers before him -- either that or the guy is a maniac.

I think we have enough information here, actually. I will never play QJo from early position in a full game. I will sometimes limp in late with 42s.

I'll take either one and fold it.

Easily 42s from the button. Then again in a full game I don't really even consider playing QJo UTG, but on the button with a bunch of awful callers 42s could possibly be profitable.

Oh and 42s open-raised from the button is better than just about anything you could do with QJo UTG.

I would most likely fold both, but if you put a gun to my head and force me to pick one here is my logic for taking one over the other:

I'd rather have 4-2s from the button than Q-Jo from UTG+1. Immediately you have the advantage of position with 4-2s. There is a good chance your hand is not dominated when playing 4-2s where Q-Jo is very likely to dominated by a wide range of hands. Also, it is possible if you hit top pair you can get yourself in trouble. With 4-2s if you hit the flop hard this is the type of hand you can crack someone stack with its trickiness value, and if you miss the flop its easy to dump.

42s on the button. Every time. Limit or no limit.

QJo is garbage and should be dumped in a full game from early position. I would love to see the QJo player berate the guy with 42s, who is actually making a better play by getting in there on the button with that hand, assuming other people lipmed and the pot is multi-way.

That's sort of like asking wheter I'd rather be shot or stabbed.
