View Full Version : How did my avatar screw everything up?

In this (http://tinyurl.com/6z245) thread there were a bunch of responses titled "wtf" that were talking about my avatar (a small picture of General James Longstreet that I Googled and linked) causing some sort of problem. I immediately removed it but am still curious about how a link to an avatar can cause problems (it also occurred in another thread, but I forget where).

I've had this avatar (my first) for about a month but this is the first I've heard regarding it causing any trouble /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anytime a page was loaded that had one of your posts (and your avatar), the web browser brought up a pop-up prompt for a name/password which had to be closed. It was annoying.

When you link anything from a site you're not responsible for, you're always running the risk of it getting taken offline, or even changed into something gross/lacking in taste or otherwise.

What probably happened was the guy that was paying for the webspace saw that he had an image that was being accessed a whole lot more than normal, figured someone was stealing his bandwidth and removed the picture.

Or, the site could have been going through maintenance, and that's why the login:password prompt came up, so that no one without access could get into the site while he was updating.

Thanks, this makes sense.

I don't have a web site (well actually I do, some Earthlink point and click thing I built in about five minutes and haven't even accessed once).

Anyway, what is the proper way to display an avatar?

Go to Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) and set up a free account. You will have to save the images you find to your computer. You can then place them on photobucket and link from there.

Thanks. I looked over the site and I'll do that. Was I the only one on this board that either:

a) doesn't have a usable personal web site I could link from?

or

b) isn't aware of services like Photobucket?

When my IE tried to download your avatar, it locked up, though I have no clue why.

One of elwoodblues' posts in the Politics including an image that after awhile changed into a montage of about 25 penes.
