If we are just talking about PC games, it has to be Warcraft.

EDIT-

Actually, 1985-1995 is such a huge time fram for video games. It may not be possible to name a "best" for that time period. There are a lot of quality games from that decade.

There were so many revolutionary games produced during that 10 year span. Sometimes things aren't "better", they're just different.

Might be easier to do as a genre thing as opposed to all games over a 10 yr period - this 10 yr period is especially difficult because of the advances in computing. By 1995 I think Pentiums were available (or just about to be) whereas in 1985 I don't think 286s were even out yet. Hard to compare games from such different eras.

Anyway, off the top of my head my favorite games were. . .hmm. . .

Civ I
Ultima 7
Betrayal at Krondor
Bard's Tale I
Star Control 2

Yes, I'm a nerd who palyed RPGs.

tie fighter was newer than '95 IIRC.

Here (http://www.the-underdogs.org/) is where to find old games and new, most are freeware or abandonware.

Also you need to get dosbox. This is the greatest program. It emulates old dos and a 386. You can speed it up, slow it down and do pretty much anything you need to get old games to work. It is freeware.

No, Civ 2 was definitely after 95. Actually, I suspect a few of the games here were after 95.

I still love Star Control 2. I'd play it today if I had it. Some of the best dialogue writing in a game ever, especially for something from over 10 years ago.

1st place: Spectre. Come on, it's the first truly 3d game for god's sake

2nd place: Marathon. Doom may have invented FPS but Marathon took it to a completely different level. Marathon was the first game ever to include a level editor and I maintain it's still the best level editor ever created.

Wolfenstein 3D was a really sweet game! It had a nicer feel to me than Doom 1/2 did, albeit with much lower end graphics. Back in the 80's when I had an Amiga there were a few cool games that my dad bought, but I can't remember all of their names off hand. 'Shadow of the Beast' and 'Rocket Ranger' come to mind.

Wolfenstein I have to agree with always preferred it to doom.

Sad thing is I remember tenyears ago buying PC magazines and thinking the graphics for Price Of Persia and Red Baron looked fantastic, I also think in those days the consoles where way ahead of PC's in game terms, game manufacturers were just starting to cotton on to the game potential of pc's.

Nah, I didn't make 'it' look good.
What he/she/it said was a silly thing to say, IMHO.

Tetris is a solid game which has also sold extremely well. It's a worthy mention.

I still love Star Control 2. I'd play it today if I had it. Some of the best dialogue writing in a game ever, especially for something from over 10 years ago.

Google "Ur-Quan Masters" and thank me later.

I will agree with Master of Orion, but StarCon2 and Civ are top 3 as well.

disclaimer: I've played <10 PC games in my life

Marathon was a pretty awesome FPS that seems like the grandfather of Halo 1 PC.

I still don't think Marathon counts, as it was a Mac game.

But aside from that one minor gripe, I really loved Marathon.
I believe it was, in some ways, ahead of its time.

I say Quake III.

The popular answer would have to be The Sims. I wasn't a fan of the game but to my knowledge it still holds the all-time sales record.

Neither of these games came out before 1995.

And if you are going with an all-time list, these games are not the best choices.

Half-Life over Quake 3 in that category by several miles.

The Sims?

Meh.
It was a very quality game, but overrated.

Sales don't equal greatness.

BUH! I incorrectly read the question. My bad.

I do agree that "Sales don't equal greatness". I think Half-life is WAY too slow compared to Quake.

A lot depends on the type of map you are playing, but for fast paced game play I think UT2003 was even better. The dodge moves added a lot to the game. Kind of like the HL jump pack, but in any direction.

I don't really think speed is what makes the game.

HL wins (for me) because of all the other aspects it brought to FPS games.

Hell, even Doom 3 tried to emulate Half-Life in certain spots..
Id recognized the value in many of Valve's ideas.

Regardless, this is a debate that I'm sure has been done somewhere before. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

There are just way way too many games to list here, so let's go by Category:

Adventure: Monkey Island 1+2.

RPG: Ultima 7 - no other RPG comes close

Flight Combat: Wing Commander 1+2

RTS: Warcraft

Simulation: Civilization. I also have to agree that this is the best PC game ever made. Sid Meier is a [censored] genius.

Sports: 4D Boxing. This game PwNed!!!

Racing: Need for Speed - or did that come after 1995?

Ultima 7 / System Shock / Arena

X-Wing / Tie Fighter

I STILL play X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. You can download super realistic graphic mods of all the ships and objects from the net and with today's computers it is even better than 10 years ago.

It has still a great game playing atmosphere. There are also some battlenet servers where players still play it online.

My vote has to be for a little 2d online game known as subspace. Created by VIE in 95 the beta was known as sniper its more or less multiplayer asteriods. The great thing about it is it's 100% free and still has a very active community. One of those easy to learn lifetime to master type games. The servers are no longer ran by VIE. A few of the players have even added some new features and bots. Due to legal issues they renamed the game continuum. linky (http://www.subspacehq.com)
