In a recent home game, I watched one player go all in after hitting four 9's on the flop, he was called by one person who hit a set of queens, only to river the fourth queen.

I've only seen quads a handful of times in the short period i've been playing poker. But what would the odds be of something like this happening?

Ive seen this happen too. My dad was playing in an omaha tourney and my dad had Aces in his hand. The flop came with two jacks on the board. He saw the turn and hit an A for Aces full. He rivered the case A. His opponnent had flopped quad Jacks. Never seen anything like it and probably never will again, heh. Sorry I didnt answer the probablility question, but thats been the most amazing thing Ive ever seen playing poker.

Actually happens rather frequently in Omaha (frequently considering the fact it's Quads over Quads and you have to have 2 pair on the board to have it) actually. Not sure exact odds for Omaha or for HE, though it shouldn't be that hard to figure out. Just evaluate the following expression for HE and it should be right, (x y) means "x choose y":
(13 1)*(4 1)*(3 1)*(2 1)*(1 1)*
(12 1)*(4 1)*(3 1)*(2 1)*(1 1)*
(11 1)*(4 1)=Total # of 9 card possibilities with 2 4oaks

Divide that by: (52 9) and you should have your probability! Keep in mind this is saying "what's the probability these 2 specific players both get 4oak" NOT "what's the probability ANY 2 players get 4oak"

uhhhhhhh. if only I was good at math.

Thanks though. It gives me an idea how insane this is.

The bad beat jackpot at Party Poker relies on this probability (well, plus quads losing to straight flushes)

The jackpot is won every few days. But when you consider:

People are playing at those tables 24X7
There are dozens of tables (varies depending on the time of day).
Over 1 hand per minute per table.

Thats a lot of hands between jackpot wins
