Off the top of my head, I think:

The Silence of the Lambs
Pulp Fiction
The Shawshank Redemption
American History X
Jingle All the Way

Thoughts?

The funny thing is that I agree about Pulp and Shawshank being on the list, and both finished behind Gump for best picture. That was the year I stopped watching awards shows of any kind as I realized I didn't give a rats ass about what other people thought.

Gump is quite leet. However it almost seems trite to me at this point. I've probably just seen Sinise's legless body too many times.

While Scorcese may be overrated, Goodfellas, in my opinion, is one of the best films of the last 15 years. It has a timless quality, and repeated watchability.

And I can't believe I forgot to mention The Usual Suspects.

I've seen this movie too. One scene I have a problem with is when Ed Norton tells the black guy to lay down on the curb. Wtf did the guy think he was gonna do? I would have made him shoot me before I would have laid down. An ugly scene. But this is a common movie theme where one of the characters threatens another with a gun and they submit even though taking a bullet would be a much better fate then what awaits them. No biggy

This is from the top of my head and may be subject to change. In no particular order:

Garden State
Million Dollar Baby
City of God
Training Day
LOTR

I couldn't choose just five....here's fifteen of my favorites from the past fifteen years, in no particular order...
...except the first one - the Three Colors trilogy is the beast piece of filmmaking I've ever seen. If you've never seen any Kieslowski, search him out - "The Double Life of Veronique" and "The Decalogue" are also brilliant.

Trois Coleurs (Blue, White and Red), Krystof Kieslowski
Memento, Christopher Nolan
Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino
Mulholland Drive, David Lynch
The Thin Red Line, Terence Malik
Sex and Lucia, Julio Medem
Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
The Lord of the Rings (Peter Jackson)
The Limey, Steven Soderburgh
Hero (some Chinese dude)
The Sixth Sense (M. Night S.)
Exotica (Atom Egoyan)
Dead Man Walking (Tim Robbins)
The Piano ((Jane Campoin)
Queen Margot (Patrice Chereau)

Oh, I know it's pretty gay to admit liking Bridges of Madison County...yet I can't help feeling this way. The movie is so incredibly well made, everything from the writing to the music (some of which Clint himself wrote and played), and the performances of both Clint and Streep are flawless.

Now, I'm not a big fan of chick flick type movies, but Bridges is just a damn good movie. Oh well...

no need to apologize - it's a great, romantic movie.

But the book is still laughably, horribly bad.

I'll second consideration for Ghost World.

Maybe I'm grouchy...but almost every movie I'm coming up with feels like it shouldn't deserve consideration for top 5.

Amongst the candidates:

Trainspotting
Pi
Ghost World (kinda/sorta)
Clockwatchers
Shawshank
American Beauty
Big Lebowski
Mallrats (kinda/sorta)
Reservoir Dogs
Before Sunrise
Scent of a Woman
Leaving Las Vegas
Wonderboys

hell....even Rounders

and then there's the timeless classic Baseketball ("you're excited?!?! Fell these nipples!" - Bob Costas)

but right now narrowing it down to 5 feels like it would actually imply too much greatness when it's really just an exercise in weeding-out the 'not quite as mediocre'

But...if I must...here's my 5 (for the time-being):

Wonderboys
American Beauty
Before Sunrise
Clockwatchers
Shawshank (barely makes it....effect has been diluted due to over-exposure)

(R-Dogs gets a close 6th)

Scorcese bores me and the only list of mine that Good Fellas would make would be 'over-rated films'.

I think someone mentioned Raising Arizona which I thought was circa 1988 or 1989.

great topic, i am not sure if it is possible for me to narrow it down to just five.

Tier One
Lost In Translation
Pulp Fiction
Virgin Suicides
American Beauty
City of God

Tier Two
Magnolia
Usuall Suspects
Fight Club
Royal Tenenbuams
Adaptation

Teir Three
Cider House Rules
Punch Drunk Love
Clerks
Vanilla Sky
Being John Malkovich

This changes almost daily for me. I got a lot of stuff that I need to watch right now (thirteen, swimming pool, garden state, ect)

Upon further review, City of God definitely makes my list, narrowly defeating Kindergarten Cop.

Others to consider: The Lion King, The Sixth Sense, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Dances with Wolves, Shakespeare in Love, and High Fidelity (since this thread is very High Fidelity themed)

I think a good follow-up thread would be which movies that are agreed upon in this list would make the list of top five movies of all time. I don't think anything mentioned yet compares favorably to Gone With the Wind, Ben Hur, Citizen Kane, Casa Blanca, etc. I think a post-1990 movie might occupy one spot on the all-time list, maximum. Which recent film could stand among those giants?

Clearly, everyone got it wrong.

I'LL give you THE top 5 from 1990-2005 (in no particular order):

LOTR (I'm gonna steal Clarky's suggestion of stringing all 3 movies together for 1 long movie)
Goodfellas
Gladiator
Saving Private Ryan
Braveheart

I also have an honorable mention list:

Donnie Brasco
The Professional
Titanic
Silence of the Lambs
Rounders (this is 2+2 right?)

If it were the greatest 5 movies of the past 17 years, the clear #1 would be......

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988).

Do you see why? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can't beleive no one has said "once were warriors yet" its a classic movie, a must see for anyone. Also u gotta put rounders in there, its a quality movie.

Therefore my list is
in no order

Braveheart
Rounders
Fight Club
Once Were Warriors
American Beauty

I'm going to cheat and do my top 10, because I couldn't force myself to pare this down:

Leaving Las Vegas (A dark but brilliantly acted movie.)
21 Grams (IMO, Sean Penn's finest role.)
The Big Lebowski (This seems to make a lot of lists.)
The Thin Blue Line (My pick for #1.)
Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino's best movie.)
The Unforgiven (IMO, much better than Mystic River)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Almost perfect.)
Fargo (Great acting from McDermott and Macy.)
Traffic (del Toro should have won an Oscar.)
As Good As It Gets (Nicholson doing what he does best.)

I would give honorable mentions to Schindler's List, Dead Men Walking, The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, American Beauty and LA Confidential.
