View Full Version : Championship NL and PL HE - any good?

I've started playing SnGs recently, so I went to beef up my poker library in that area (I already have TPFAP). Specifically, I was going after Harrington's book (HOH). Unfortunately, the local book store was sold out, and of course I couldn't leave empty handed, so I had to get something. I couldn't remember what other NL tournament books were considered "good," so I took a stab at random and picked up Championship NL and PL HE (McEvoy and Cloutier). (They also had Win Your Way Into Big Money Hold'em Tournaments by Dougherty and McEvoy, but it looked like it lacked "meat.")

A search on the forums turned up hardly anything on the book except one thread basically saying "there's nothing new here."

Before I read it and pick up bad habits, anyone got any feedback?

there's tons of stuff. mostly rip jobs. it advocates supertight play. it's full of anecdotes that many consider to be irrelevant. i like it, but it certainly doesn't stand alone as THE tournament book. for that, you must buy:

I thought so at first, but apparently that thread only talks about the limit book.

You can read it for the bizarre anecdotes it's filled with.

If you can't wait until you get HoH just read the forums on tournaments here. You will probably learn more from the first three pages than from the book.

Yes, TJ is a great tournament player. His books have little, if anything, to do with how TJ plays poker. Sometimes I wonder if they are deliberately misleading.

Good idea -- I had forgotten about that thread. Found it here. If Mason's review is accurate, all I can say is: ugh -- I wonder if I can get my money back?

Edit: oops, once again I've been fooled by the limit book. Doesn't look like Mason covered this one in his post.

Hi JoJo:

I gave their pot limit book a 6. It has value for supplemental reading.

Best wishes,
Mason

Thanks, Mason. At least it'll be worth my time to read.
