question on new ipod shuffle

Ok my friend just ordered a new ipod shuffle from ebay. Since the ipod shuffle has the usb port on it, can you just directly drag and drop mp3s to your ipod or do you need some itunes software?

Pretty sure you need iTunes software, it should come with it.
