FYI goldfinger64 is a loose passive player.

How should I have played this? Should I have checked after the flop, or Should I have bet after the flop and then checked @ the turn??

It has been brought up time and time again....use the converter! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

No in all honesty what has been brought up time and time again is your river bet. Any better hand (any pair) will call and any other hand will fold. Since you have the best non-pair hand, there is no value in betting the river.

bet the flop, bet the turn, check at the river...

Hero is last to act. We can take a free showdown by checking. When you are 1st to act, it is a tougher decision but normally I would check/fold.

The flop/turn bets are fine. On the river, your opponent checked to you. In this case, you can just check and take a showdown. You don't have to worry about anyone betting because you are last to act (why position is nice).

Absent any reads, and without pairing the board, I check/fold the river here.
