well, the other night her and I were talking and this somehow came up.

I just spit out a random number for how many I think it would take. She didnt agree. She thought it would be much more.
I didnt think much of it until she created a post about it somewhere else. So I just went with it. Created an excel spreadsheet that totals everything for me.


Anyway, I just took Business Stats last semester and got an A. I know I could figure this out, but dont care to really think about it. This is more fun /images/graemlins/smile.gif
But just out of curiosity, do you know what the expected number is?

It will be more than 750.

Just thought in the bath. The maths is not so simple. Finding out the likelihood of any particular number is straightforward, and thus finding the most likely number is not too straining. But finding the expected value is more tricky, and I suspect, involves some nasty(ish) integration.

It is further complicated if you consider the non uniformity of the birthdate distribution. More people are born in spring than any other time of the year (think about it).

I have not come up with a formula yet, but I suspect it's a very large number before you have even a 50% chance of having all the birthdays covered. You're going to need lots of surveys in lots of places /images/graemlins/grin.gif.
