If by drawing dead you mean drawing dead to even splits, I think 8 is the minimum. I think if you accept splits you can start drawing dead at 5 (AA vs. KK vs. KK vs. TT vs. TT)

If you're really bored, figure out how many hands, and what they are, you need for AA to be drawing dead. I did that in class one day.

Why do you need 99 and 55?

No straights can be made when you include all 4 9's

Same reason for including all 4 5's. Now there's no possible straights that can be made with board-only cards, so there can be no splits.

How can AA be drawing dead? I'm either misinterpreting what you wrote or I'm missing something obvious.

I think the basic theory is that if you are dealt AcAd, you leave the deck stacked so that the only possible hands to come up are spade and heart flushes, 3- and 4-of a kind made with cards in other hands, non-Broadway straights, etc. Basically, that would be any hand that couldn't involve an Ac or Ad in the final decision and any board-only straights that couldn't be trumped by an overstraight using somebody else's hole cards.

Wow, that must have been a REALLY boring class.

Wouldn't that take more than 9 hands?
