View Full Version : Hand selection and Fluxuation

I've had some tough swings lately. Mostly down. With an adaquate bankroll I know it is important to push all +ev situations no matter the size. However if you avoid small +ev situations you will improve your "success" rate. Something I need to do with my somewhat weakened bankroll. Playing lower is a good way to go but not really an option as I cannot play online and the lowest limit offered in my card room is 5/10. I have just under 200 BB (1,750 ish). The games in my room are pretty loose/passive. With preflop raises rare and 4-8 people seeing each flop. In these situations what would optimal starting hand/types of hands be for minimizing fluxuation with a goal of bankroll building?

Intuitivly I feel I should play from late position with Nut flush draws and small pairs and suited connectors. all when the # of callers is correct, in order to ensure a higher percentage of wins. As well as big pairs and AK...

How flawed is this thinking?

Cheers,
Timothy

It seems like your intuition is correct. Also, depending on your particular opponents, it might also be correct to call these "drawing hands" up front and in middle positions if you get the right implied odds...and from what you describe as your average table, it sounds like you can. As the table tightens up, you should be more inclined muck these hands as your EV will head toward the negative side.

a few things... why can't you play online? just curious.... it would be an easy way to drop limits and work on your bankroll. with a limited bankroll it might not be a bad idea to avoid really small +EV situations. it will help control variance and make a potentially ruinous downswing less likely.

Posting from work...my computer is borked and I tend to play better in a live environment. It keeps me more focused and the players are much worse. I've posted plenty of good gains there but lady luck can have a spiteful side. I've been losing the standard bad beats....flopped set of Tens taken out by running 2's vs a maniac with 23o. Etc.

I also spend enough time at a computer working and adding Net play would put my time infront of a monitor far too high.

Thanks for your advice though.

I may step down a tad and play some 1/2 NL local games instead of the boats structured games. Their high rake may be taking a toll as well...5 max rake with 5 sitting fee...indiana sucks.

at least you have a casino. the closest to me is 7 hours away. that seems like alot of rake/fee. if you're just having a few badbeats it might just be a run of the mill downswing and it'll even out. whatever you decide to do... good luck.
