Why do they box out during the fisrt of two free throw attempts?

If you're talking about college, it's because most free throw attempts are 1-1, so if you miss the 1st shot, the play is live and there is no 2nd attempt.

I'm guessing your talking about college ball. They have what's called bonus free throws or a one and one.

The player needs to make the first one to earn the second one. If he misses the first one it's a live ball.
