View Full Version : Should I have feared value betting the river?

In the first hand, UTG+1 was a calling station but I had no read on BB or MP-1. My flop raise was a semibluff (OESD+1 over) and to pressure the draws. Is a value bet on the river indicated with 2nd pair in a situation such as this?

In the second hand, both UTG and CO were loose with UTG being more aggro. Any reason for me to have checked the river (with straight and flush being possible)? I think I missed a bet here since UTG had not been aggressive so far. What are the best ways to judge when a river value bet is safe and unsafe?

Checking the river in hand 2 is bad. This is a clear straight forward value bet. Yeah sometimes you will lose to 2 pair or a flush but you will get paid far more often then you will get drawn on.

Bet these every time.

Hand 1) If you bet, I don't see what hands that you beat that will call.

Hand 2) I think that you need to value bet this river, although it is very likely that he was on a spade draw and was looking for a check/raise.

(given that you have some type of read on the player)
This is just plain wrong. People say this way too often. I dont konw what limits you play, but if its the lower end of small stakes and you never run into oppenents that will call with a 10 here then you need to work on your table selection and try to find more fish.
