The free card play looks scrumptióus, but could someone help me out with the preflop raise? I don't understand how 89s has enough value against 5 limpers.

As I always say 'It's an art not a science!'.

Nice Hand

Gold star for this one homeskillet. Okay it is time for me to go impress some people at the local B&M. It's a shame none of you live in the bay area and can't meet up at Lucky Chances to gamble it up at 6/12. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Download Pokerstove and run a sim. It will help you realize how good his hand is more then having me tell you that it is $$$ in your pocket.

equity (%) win (%) / tie (%)

Hand 1: 17.8257 % [ 00.17 00.01 ] { 98s }
Hand 2: 13.6279 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }
Hand 3: 13.7154 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }
Hand 4: 13.7070 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }
Hand 5: 13.7469 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }
Hand 6: 13.6834 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }
Hand 7: 13.6937 % [ 00.13 00.01 ] { random }

I stuck in an extra player to assume one behind us will call too. Your raise is putting in a little over 14% equity and you're getting a little under 18% back. And this is assuming that each of these players will limp with 72o. Isn't this pretty slim?

I see value there. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah, I suppose so - I guess instead of bitching, the constructive thing I should be doing is learning more about it: how little pot equity would you need in this hand for it still to be worth a value raise? 14.5%? 15%? 16%?

(flop raise)
with all the overs that could come, a stop-n-go seems semi-likely here. are you attempting this on a typical 2/4 table?

if we call closing the action, and our money card 6 comes on the turn, BB should still bet his overpair, 5x, or 7x, giving us a sweet field trapping raise.

if its 3-bet, representing a 5, our free card ploy is gone, and our equity is wiped out. we're *barely* a favorite against random hands. callers with two overcards (vs random hands proclivity to have some undercards) or 8x/9x with better kickers might make us a wash.

is the free card that big a coup that its worth spending the extra $$. its success with this large field just seems a tad dubious.
