SEATTLE - Microsoft will replace more than 14 million power cables for its Xbox video game consoles because of safety concerns.

The recall affects about 70 per cent of the approximately 20 million consoles sold worldwide since its launch in 2001, Microsoft said Thursday.

20 million Xbox consoles sold worldwide Stressing incidents were "rare," the company said it was taking the step as "a precautionary measure and out of concern for consumer safety."

Microsoft moved after receiving 30 reports of minor injury or property damage caused by faulty cables. Seven customers had reported minor burns to their hands.

One of these injuries occurred in Canada, but Microsoft declined to say where.

Greg Barber, vice-president of the Home and Entertainment Division at Microsoft Canada, said the injury "was similar to touching a hot iron."

He added that fewer than a million cords will have to be replaced in Canada.

Everywhere except Europe, the recall affects Xboxes manufactured before Oct. 23, 2003.

Xbox owners can go to www.xbox.com (http://www.xbox.com) and click on the Power Cord Replacement for Xbox link or – in Canada – call 1-866-271-0450.

Until a new cord is delivered, Xbox users should turn off their game players when not in use, Microsoft said.

Microsoft would not say how much the recall would cost the company.

Microsoft (NSD:MSFT)shares fell 14 cents to close at $25.65 US in Thursday trading on the Nasdaq stock market.
