Vegas was fun this weekend. I had an excellent time with NLSoldier, The Dude, and GoT. I met a bunch of others also, but the list is too long to write them down and I'm sure I'd forget some of them. I must say it's weird meeting a lot of these guys because you have this image of them built up in your head from seeing their posts online, and then they can turn out to be completely different. Not better or worse, just different. Anyways, some tidbits from the trip:
We drove in a day early to play poker all night. We had a room for Fri thru Mon nights, and we drove up thursday evening. We all ran well the first night and basically for the whole trip. I played mostly 10/20, and mixed in some 20/40 while giving away a quarter of my action. I didn't play as many hours as GoT and The Dude, since they tell me that I'm more likely to finish ahead if I play less hours. I'm not sure what they mean by this.
One night we played some poker up in the room, and the favorite game was a version of blind man's bluff. I was the big loser, dropping almost my entire buy in to the morons I was rooming with, but I'm pretty sure I just ran bad. We all decided afterwards that I definitely played best.
I always suspected it, but now I'm absolutely sure that NLSoldier is a nit. I have some examples to back up my statement, and Clarkmeister can back me up also. NLSoldier had never played a hand of blackjack before, so me and GoT wanted to take him out for some five dollar blackjack one night. We couldn't find a five dollar table, and he refused to play at a ten dollar table. Mind you this would be more acceptable if he weren't up a very good chunk of money on the trip. Our first night at the tables, he wouldn't even order a drink for a while because he thought he'd get carded. Then he finally got the balls to do so, but kept taking ridiculous precautions. He'd make sure and hold up the beer he already had everytime he ordered because cocktail waitresses usually think, "well he's already been drinking he must be 21."
More nittiness. He's got half my action in the 20/40 game, and I get a table change to sit at the table where Clark, Anyfox, Tommy, and The Dude are sitting. My seat is pretty good for the game, as I have two unknowns to my right, who played decent but they were soft spots in this game. I have Tommy and The Dude on my left, which is usually good except when Tommy cold calls my raises and scares the hell out of me by having the nerve to call my flop bet also. So anyways, when I sit down, NLSoldier pusses out and decides he doesn't want half my action anymore. He refuses to take more than a quarter of my action. Mind you this is after I've already made him $250 on this trip from him taking parts of my action. I finished the session up $52. The nit cost himself $13. NLSoldier's lack of value betting when we played 2/4 in Tommy's room was also rather sad. I'll let Clark elaborate on that one.
For those of you who want to get pissy about the last two paragraphs, I assure you it's all in good fun.
I've seen Andyfox post in the past that he's decided to bet the flop and check the turn whenever he flops quads. Well instead he bet the flop, called the raise, and then bet the turn. I'm disappointed. I've seen Clarkmeister post about betting out when the four flush hits on the river and it's heads up. Good thing I know how he plays so I was able to call him down with second pair and my hand is good (This was a 2/4 hand though). After all of Tommy's posts in the past, I wasn't sure what to expect out of his play. The part about him playing the button and usually knowing what his opponents have on the turn without them having a clue what he's got is absolutely correct. Even in our home game, I could never put him on a hand until he called the river. That's when I knew I was beat. It's a good thing that NLSoldier was in that game so I was still a favorite.
