It probably depends on the relative costs in your area. Gas bills at my apartment in Worcester, MA were serious pwnage in the winter, but I didn't know anyone with oil up there to compare.

If the choice also affects your kitchen, gas is much better. Electric stoves suck.

In have had both in MA and gas is much more expensive to heat with.

gas is more expensive sometimes but burning diesel fuel isnt a good thing. makes your house dirty and you are at the whim of the supply companies. i have had both. plus the diesel isnt as clean anymore so you have more problems with your injectors keeping them clean.
i vote for a heat pump if you can afford it as it provides air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter.

In the northeast U.S., gas is way more expensive than oil. A downside is that in some places you can get city gas, whereas with oil you need to get deliveries and you can run out; this is teh s uck in the winter.
