Was this fold too weak-tight? What hands would I need to raise/call with?

Definitely not terrible, but I don't fold there. It's kind of an unplesant situation due to the stack sizes and blinds here.

This is a wierd hand. A3o on the small blind is marginal, but because of the pot odds, many would call (in my case, it would depend on what my feel of the game is).

However, you have an additional factor, assuming you're going to play this hand, do you call or raise. If I'm button, or SB and everyone has folded before me, I'm usually thinking raise to try to steal the blinds.

With your Ace, you're a favorite heads up unless BB has a pocket pair or an A. That being the case, I'd give serious thought to raising 150 here (ie, make it 3BB).

The reason that raising to 150 is unpleasant is that if the BB goes allin you have a very difficult decision.
If you plan to fold if reraised then go for it, but you have to understand you'll be folding the best hand a reasonable amount of the time. If you plan to call an allin, I'd move allin myself, as I don't want to convince him to play hands like A6o.

You always have that problem when you try to steal a blind with a marginal hand.

Admittedly, you can either make or lose a lot of chips with this hand.

(Errata from my previous post -- I had meant to say 100 chips, 2x big blind, though if I were mixing things up, I'd say that 3x big blind in this situation would be right about 1/3 the time.)

You don't always have that problem. This time the problem is accentuated because the BB can only raise you about 350 more chips. If the BB had more $$ itd be much easier to play

True. But all that means is that BB is more likely to go all in with something like KJ.

Makes calling all-in an easier move.

Though I really don't like A3o in this case (it's a problematic holding), in a marginal case, like this, I'll take the aggressive route most of the time.

Yeah but Im not really in the mood to race with A3 vs KJ here, so I'd move allin to begin with in this particular spot (as opposed to raising to 150 and calling the allin).

I see your point. Going to think about it.

btw note that I havent advocated moving allin, I just prefer it to raising to 150 with the intention of calling.
Not quite sure what I'd do, it'd often depend on my perception of the opponent.

I agree with you -- that you have to call the all-in against a short stacked if you bet the 150

I also agree, that perception of BB is key.

I also agree that it's a tough decision with those cards.

Where I'm coming from, is that if I think I'm ahead, heads up, I usually play the hand.

bb has less than 10bb left, but your hand is pretty weak too. So folding is not bad against aggressive player, but against unagressive player, limp or push is two options. I like limp better.

I will never fold preflop, but it's possible I might call. I'd have to actually be playing to know what Id do /images/graemlins/smile.gif
