I was playing at a low limit table last night and there was a player who was absolutely maniacal. Constantly raising with nothing, going to the river with Q high, etc. I seem to be seeing a fair share of these type of players lately, and I was just curious, does anybody know a person in real life who plays like this? A friend, relative? I was just wondering what type of personality this person has, his intelligence level, what he does for a living, etc. Are these people extroverts, smart, not so-smart, high-energy, laid back? Just curious as to what made them tick. And I'm not talking about the intelligent pseudo-maniacal player. I'm talking about the one who almost always leaves the table empty handed. Thanks.

That struck me as hilarious.

I played against someone live like this last night, though I don't know him. He was winning at the beginning, and let everyone know how smart he was and what reads he had on everyone. Then he started losing and it was as if no one had seen the trouble he'd seen.

It was hard to determine his intelligence, but it seemed like he skimmed a book once. According to him he had to borrow his buy-in because he's not getting paid until Friday, so were not talking CEO of a major corporation. Or at least not a successful one.

The only person I know personally that plays like that is filthy rich and didn't get there because he's dumb. He simply plays for fun, and as we all know, it's much more fun to just throw chips around. He's a great guy... he just doesn't care about amount of coin he plays poker with. He's there to enjoy himself. Nothing wrong with that.

Hi JO,

From a poker student's point of view, maniacs are illogical and at times a great target. However, with lack of a better description, they are just gamblers. They are the ones who would "let it ride" on the craps or roulette table, and are playing for the rush. They do not see playing wild poker as any different as any other casino table game. "Proper" play is not what they are seeking, they are just there to have fun and see how much money they can pick up in the shortest amount of time. The money that you see them part with does not have the same value to them as it does to us. Be careful though, going on rides with them may cause huge fluctuations in your chips and it is often wise to stay clear of such games if you are not skilled in these games.

Live many are BJ players or Baccarat who are [censored] around, or they are high stakes guys waiting on the highstakes game and playing the white chip games....
