Floating is when you cold call someone who plays passively and predictably after the flop, with the intention of winning the pot on a later street? Is this correct?

What hands are good hands to "float" with? Can someone give me some pointers on how/what to do exactly to make it effective and profitable? I imagine it is much better to do it live than online, where you can get a read?

Thanks.

my impression is floating is not something you want to study and emmulate.

If you need to ask about floating, you'll go broke trying it. Floaters fall into two categories: Those who control the game well, understand players and the situations available in higher limit games where pots are usually shorthanded, and who change gears. The second category are those begging for a stake on the rail.
