View Full Version : top ten things i've learned in vegas thus far

10) logging onto the internet on your tv screen sucks. it's har to type in caps on the crummy keyboard they give you, so tonight i'm mike'l/ray zee. please forgive any typos, since i can't see the screen too good.

9) roulette: they now have a hole in the table where all the losing bets are deposited and the machine automatically sorts the chips by color. i need one of these for my sock drawer.

a man was explaining the game to his wife and started out, "you see, there are 36 numbers, so if you hit one they should pay you 36 to 1." Apparently he learned the game from bob ciaffone.

8) the hardest part of staying at the hilton is that barrly manilow is on the muzak in the elevator all the time. oh, mandy.

7) a game where nobody limps can't be beaten unless you flop quads and play them badly. i'll let others elaborate.

6) zumanity sucks big time (no pun intended). Skip it and see "o" of one of theother circque shows.

5) unless you've seen tommy take two big big stacks of chips, all in one hand, set his elbow down on the table, let his forearm drop, pound the chips on the table, and leave off exactly two stacks of four, you haven't lived. definitely worth the price of admission.

4) there are some nice people in the pit. a guy with ten wanted to hit his blackjack hand and the dealer accidentally didn't hit him and turned over her twenty. The guy, on 3rd base, called for the pit boss, or whatever they're called. The boss sized things up, and told the dealer to hit him. a six. sixteen. hit him again, the boss said. a three. ninenteen. the guy shrugs and surrenders. no, says the boss, hit him again. a two. twenty one. they paid him.

4) it's too much trouble to scroll up, so if i've skipped a number or used one twice, too bad.

all the 2+2ers are both fun and nice, even the ones who tell you, upon meeting you, "you're old."

3) vegas is a horrible thing to do to a perfectly good piece of desert.

2) if i played with 2+2ers all the time, my face would be in a permanent grin, but my wallet would not be.

1) thank heaven for california pizza kitchen.

really enjoyed meeting everybody. good time guys.

Great post. Not quite 'Tommy Flare' but then, what is?

Good BJ story. I've also noticed during my many BJ sessions that, more often than not, the dealers and bosses are generous and give a great deal of latitude. Why not. They are eventually going to get most peoples money.

'hilton'. The Flamingo Hilton? I've stayed there a few times. Don't eat at the buffet. Well, just don't eat there period may be better advice.

Glad you are enjoying the visit. Go see Red Rocks State(?) Park. Great desert vistas.

Andy:

I was a railbird for the quads hand, do you recall how that action played out? I recall you betting out on the flop rather than check raising the Dude after he pre-flop raise.

PS: What state do you live in?
PPS: Great meeting you as well. We thought you were going to sit in for our "magoo" game, we set up a seperate rotation game table but it never got off the ground.

I truly expected I'd be the oldest person there (besides Mason, of course, but who really knew if Mason would show?). So I was pleasantly surprised to see so much gray hair besides my own! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've noticed poker players can be a little tense and anal, so I've developed a kind of tactless approach upon meeting them in person, by saying crazy, off the wall stuff to loosen them up.

Okay, I'm always like that, but I go overboard with poker players, lol. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I remember the best line Glenn ever said to me, back before we were married (poor guy):

"You never hesitate to make a complete fool out of yourself in public, do you?"

I pondered, then said, "Hmmm, no, not really."

It was great meeting you, Andy, truly. Next time have dinner with us, not those other losers who begged you to go with them, lol.

Naw, like TT, you just were too cute to be straight. Guys shouldn't be allowed to be so good looking, especially poker playing guys. Putting down he collar of the Puma jacket and unzipping it helped, though.

[/ QUOTE ]

In general yes, but if you have gall (or chutzpah) and are modest also, then this feat is easily accomplished and the ‘impossible’ disappears like fog whisked away by a summer breeze.

[ QUOTE ]
You raise an interesting point: Isn't it impossible to accurately identify oneself as modest?

[/ QUOTE ]

Therefore, only other people can identify you as modest? And point that out to others or to you? And this is the only way you yourself can know you are modest? No self-perception in the modest arena?

Mmmm.

I wonder if Ed Miller knows the answer to this question. I wonder if David Sklansky knows the answer to this question. David may - but perhaps he is too modest to give the answer. In fact, if he is modest, he would probably not give an answer, given his modesty. So a non-answer from David Sklansky would mean that he is a modest person: So to with Ed Miller - And Andy Fox - And Tommy Angelo - And Ray Zee – And El Diablo - And Zeno, the most modest of them all.

Well, the SoCal folks are probably spoiled when it comes to poker comps for food.

The poker comp at the Mirage is on a limited, first come, first serve basis at 7:30 P.M. You'll see people lining up like they're at a homeless shelter to get a comp that covers 2/3 of a dinner buffet.

re: the BJ story. This really isn't that unusual. I've seen this type of stuff happen all the time. Also was a BJ dealer for 8 mths and had a few similar situations arise...

since I never cared enough about my job to pay that much attention, thus I made more mistakes than I should have.

the problem comes from advantage-players (card-counters) who are also angle-shooters.

But much of the time the casino would handle a situation like this in a similar fashion.

I have seen situations though where the guy would stand on his 19 vs. the 20 and then they would just take the guy's money and not bother telling him "dude....you should take a hit."

Given Vegas' excellent resaurants, I'd be more than willing to forego the comp. But - do you get to hold your seat at the table if you eat at the buffet? I can see where that might tip the scales for some (I'd still go out, unless that buffet is very good), especially given the apparently very long waiting lists.

The renovated buffet, called "Cravings", is actually much better than the older one. They have more of the gourmet type dishes that you see at the Aladdin's or Bellagio's buffets, as opposed to the traditional meat and potatoes schlock.

They will let you leave the table for up to about 90 minutes. The trick is to wait until a new dealer sits down at the table to get the full 90 minutes.

Hello sir - great meeting you, I learned a whole new way of playing poker:

Andy's in a multi-way discussion about movies, I think it was old Westerns. He looks at his cards and fires out a preflop raise in mid-sentence. It was kind of like "oh really? Yeah, I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood's later work too. Hang on one second, I'm just going to reach into your wallet and take $300. I never did get to see Unforgiven, did you like it?"

Good meeting you.

On the quads hand, I raised UTG (although Dude claims I was in the big blind, but I think not). Next guy cold-calls, The Dude 3-bets, everybody else folds, I call, cold-caller calls. Flop was J-J-A. I bet, guy calls, Dude raises, I call, other guy calls. Turn was a K. I bet and both call. River was a blank, I bet and both called. Dude said he had A-K, which makes sense, and the other guy must have had an A too.

I live in California (L.A.)

We thought you guys were going to another casino. I went and said hi to Mason, and then a bunch of us went to (where else?) CPK and then I went to sleep. (I had a 7 AM meeting the next day.) If I had realized you guys had stayed at the Mirage, I would have ambled over to at least kibbutz for a few minutes.

Town was jam-packed for a convention. 90,000 people come into town for this show. CPK is about 50 yards from the Mirage Poker room and, the first time, Clarkmeister wangled us a line pass. Of course there was no line and we waited 15 minutes to sit down, but hey, it's Vegas baby.

The elevator at the mirage, which i shared with only six other floors was the nuts. I hit the button on the 19th, it was half full, we got on and it went all the way down without stopping. Oh yaaaah.

When i stayed at the excalibur a few years ago i wanted to murder someone on the way down. Not only were there ten floors above me, so every elevator that came by was full, but there were another 15 below me and we stopped at 80% of them by the time i finally jumped into a crammed elevator.

By the way, you don't know who I am because I'm pretty sure I didn't mention my 2+2 name when we met, but I had lunch with you and Jim Rivett at the Bike back in December(?), and then we played 8-16 for a while. The game sucked while you were there, and then got crazy-good after you left, so naturally I lost 2 racks.

I hope it's possible for a 30-year-old to enjoy Zumanity as well, but we'll see.
